Decided on the Nikon D5200

So I need a Camera for taking pictures and recording video. I want something that can do both well and I would like to learn DSLR's. The D5200 seems like a good camera for the price. I need something with an articulating screen and decent still, and video quality.

 

Is my decision to go with the D5200 good or is there something that fits my needs better?

 

The pictures I plan to take are like, hiking pics, general scenery stuff, car pics, soft box pics for reviews.

 

The videos I plan to take are just general youtube videos, some vlogging(I plan to get decent lighting and I already have  good external mic), and again, car videos(maybe)

Last I heard Nikon is not sitting pretty right now. They are having huge lay offs and might go bankrupt in a couple years if things don't change

Usually you want a company to still be there for warranties, updates, and new products once you buy into their eco system. I'm more of a Cannon guy

I wanted to buy a cannon, but their t6i, is significantly more expensive(for the swivel screen) and I don't quite understand the ecosystem of a camera, nor updates. Lenses are made by a lot of 3rd party companies(don't really seem to come out with new tech for old cameras anyway) and updates, again I feel like a lot of people, if updating, use open source, or 3rd party OS for their cameras. If you buy a car and the company goes bankrupt the market for that car will slowly drop to zero so parts available and the 3rd party market will shrink to zero as well. I am not saying Nikon is going to be gone. The camera you chose seems like a great starter kit. You aren't investing thousands of dollars into a body and another couple thousand into the lens

That's sort of what I'm getting at, the only downside I can see to nikon dying after I buy their camera is resell value/warrenty, but I am not buying a camera with the intent to sell it. and the warranty only generally covers mechanical failure up to a year anyway. so I can't see myself passing up the higher spec camera for that. Unless it's not. then ill buy the other one. lol trust me, id rather have the t6i. but I dont have the money for it xD

I don't think you should be that afraid of Nikon dying. The D5xxx camera is a good for starters.

You guys haven't ever heard of minolta have you? There are a lot of companies that one expected never to fail that did, especially in the electronics sector and cameras are becoming that more and more. 

 

OP the d5200 is now a 4 year old camera, have you considered at looking at used offerings on the canon side such as the 60d or 70d?

 

The truth of the matter is that the d5200 should be one of the cheapest offerings you will find that gets the job done, but I haven't heard the best about nikon's video functionality, though I could be wrong. It might be worth it to look at the used market and see what you can get there.

I wouldn't worry too much about Nikon.  They're more than just an imaging company.  They make optics for scientific use, industrial use, and industrial machines like ones used in the manufacturing of semi conductors.

Yes I know chances are pretty slim, and that is not a reason to discard one of their products, at least not yet. 

 

What I am saying is that sadly, we shouldn't discard the possibility either, Nokia, Minolta, Blackberry, kodak...I'm sure you can name a few more. The truth of the matter is Canon and Nikon need to diversify even further, or you know, the bigger they are...

Personally I would go with a canon 60d or something around that if you can. Canon is a little better for video. I always talk about my sonys but the first camera I ever used was a Nikon d5200. It's a decent camera but I didn't like the video on it. I got better results with an iPhone. It's a good camera for stills. And don't worry about them going out of business. They make good stuff.

Is the video on the d5200 that bad? With proper lighting? I get terrible video quality out of my iphone 6s. The 60d and 70d are quite a bit out of my price range. One of the reasons why I like the d5200 is for 500(ish) bucks I can get the body, 2 lenses, a bunch of accessories, where as with for example, the t6i or the 60d, its 700 bucks for the body, then extra for lenses and any accessories. It just isn't justifiable for me.

Just keep in mind I'm not expecting cinema level quality, I know that you get what you pay for when it comes to cameras.

 

My first choice was the Cannon T6, but I want the swivel screen, and the t6i is so much more expensive.

I have no means to look at the used market in the US to compare the 2 options apart from ebay.com, however, if the price levels are similar to the UK, then the 60d is similarly priced with the 18-55mm lens. Further to that, used Canon lenses are readily available and you can get some for very good value, such as the 50 1.8, 24mm STM etc. 

 

The resolution doesn't change, it will be 1080p either way, and tbh, audio quality shouldn't be great out of the box either way, what does change is other things that assist in recording such as focusing system etc. Now I know there are people out there who use their Nikon cameras to record video and get a great result. I haven't actually used one, but it was a common criticism when I looked at reviewers comments. 

 

Also, you mention a bunch of accessories, probably an amazon bundle? These things are usually crap, you can get great results with inexpensive gear, that is true, however stuff that comes in those bundles will not even be useful, you might get a sketchy brand sd card you are not sure when will fail, or a flashgun that takes $0.05 to make and burns after firing 10 times. And I'm sorry, but $500 for a camera that has been refreshed 2 times already, even with 2 lenses, which won't be great anyway, isn't a good deal. 

 

The 60d is also a 4 year old model btw, and here is one in ebay for $530 with an 18-135mm lens.

Thanks for the advice I do really appreciate it! If something like a 60d or 70d is that much better in terms of video I will probably go and get one of those used ones, anything I should look out for when it comes to used cameras?

Also keep in mind that canon has a nice little lens bundle at Best Buy for super cheap. You get the 10-18 and 50mm for $250. So when you need some new glass for $250 it's hard to beat.

If that is your philosophy, I would highly recommend a 70d over a 60d, it is worth the premium you will pay over it, especially for videography. Also, I would probably take a 750d (t6i?) over the 60d as well, but if those are too expensive...

 

When buying used try to look at the camera beforehand. Take an sd card with you and take a couple of pictures to look at a pc and make sure the sensor is intact and is free of dust etc. Look for cosmetic marks, since they usually hint as to how it was treated. Also, look at the shutter count if possible, you can find out how to do that online, but an easy way is through an app called "DSLR controller" for canon cameras, this allows an android phone to connect with the camera using a micro usb to usb A adapter and the cameras usb cable and allows you to control the camera through your phone. The app has shutter count built in the info. Its a £7 app, but its worth it, it saves you the need of a remote and has some other good features you can check out as well. (Also works with some tablets to make a cheapo external monitor.)

Thanks for the advice I do really appreciate it! If something like a 60d or 70d is that much better in terms of video I will probably go and get one of those used ones, anything I should look out for when it comes to used cameras?

 

And I am aware of the quality in those kits, I know they are bad, but its a starting point and I would like to have a lot of those things for the same cost as the camera anyway.

 

Tbh I will most likely be taking your advice and going with the used 60d or 70d because I don't really know anything about cameras and would prefer to start with something a little better instead of buying a less than camera and then dumping the same amount of money into the camera I should have gotten in the first place.

I would defentily go with 70d over the 60d even if it costs a bit more. The advantage is worth it. 

 

When buying used grab an SD card and a PC, check for sensor dust or any other problems with the sensor by taking a couple of shots and then blowing them up to 100% in lightroom for example to make sure they look good. 

 

Check for how the body looks, lots of scratches and so on probably indicates it was used quite reckless. 

 

Also check the shutter count, take an image and use a website for it. Anything below 20-30000 should be fine imo.
