Google datacenters using Intels latest Xeons

I didn't really find this 'newsworthy' so figured I would stick it in the General Discussion.  According to an Article from overclock3d.net (https://www.overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/google_confirms_that_they_are_using_skylake_xeon_cpus_which_support_avx-512/1):

Quote

Google has confirmed that they are now using Intel's upcoming Skylake Xeon CPUs, which come with support for AVX-512 workloads for increased floating point performance.

Discussion?  Is this kind of like saying water is wet?  The main discussion point of the article appears to be whether Intel can hold some server market shares from AMD and recapture some from Nvidia with the AVX 512 support.

AFAIK AMD has not released any ryzen server CPUs with 24+ cores and 48+ threads.

So what, you think a datacenter might replace their 24 core xeons with tiny 8 core consumer CPUs?

Nah... but AMD does have their Naples lineup of Server processors scheduled for later this year if I remember...

I have just found this article, not sure how reliable it is but here it is

which says that there will be some AMD server CPUs, which might be similar to intels, it depends, I have a feeling that as neither skylake Xeons have been released (far as I know) and neither have AMDs and it's probably happening soon it could be interesting. as AMD has had some aggressive pricing recently

The problem with AMD's server lineup is the lack of availability from server manufacturers. Dell and HP release a very limited AMD line and I've never seen a Cisco UCS server with AMD in it to date, so if AMD wants to get into the server market space they'll need to cozy up to the manufacturers because the vast majority of big corporations don't do "roll your own" servers like Facebook.

So, what makes this newsworthy is the fact that Skylake Xeons aren't formally released yet.  Google is basically now become apart of the testing and validation cycle to give feedback back into Intel before launch, and Intel is committing to delivering better A0 stepping material with fewer bugs and more features enabled and working at poweron.

Google tends to like to test different platforms whenever they build a new data center, I'm pretty sure not too long ago they went with ARM though I could be wrong.

which says that there will be some AMD server CPUs, which might be similar to intels, it depends, I have a feeling that as neither skylake Xeons have been released (far as I know) and neither have AMDs and it's probably happening soon it could be interesting. as AMD has had some aggressive pricing recently

I think the pricing and availability of supported hardware is going to be key on this... AMD's Naples appears to be a brute force approach of having more cores/threads than Intel and offloading the AVX 512 workloads to dedicated GPUs through the PCIe Lanes available to it.  With the article above, Intel appears to be hoping to bring some of those offloaded tasks back to the CPU.  It'll be interesting to see how both of them shake out under different workloads.

yea, it'll be interesting, if AMD gets DELL, HP etc. behind them for their servers it could be very interesting as they might be able to make a shit tonne of money there.
