Hello, so I was having this question bubbling up in my head so let me get straight to the point. My internet speed through my modem is about 90mbps down and 11mbps up, but when I connect my old router to my modem and connect my computer through the router (not using wifi) my upload speed drops to 1-2 mbps. So what if I put an ethernet splitter inbetween my modem and router and the second fork of the splitter can go to my computer and the other end can go to my router. So I don't get any performance degredation and my familty and use the wifi. They don't do anything demanding that would cause the upload speed to lose 10 mbps it's just the router is very very old.

What exact router do you have?

If you connecting with Ethernet (via the Router) gives you terrible speeds, but not direct to the modem, then the router is the problem.

As for your question, i would run a cable from your modem to a switch, and the switch feeds both your router and your PC

Also, decent routers are available for $50. Buy a new one aswell

You need to use a switch, not a splitter.
