i was wondering, how many sailors are there on the forum?

I'm not but my dad was, and my Opa as well.

I'm not a sailor myself. But I do like riding to and from Vancouver Island and the Mainland.

I've applied for a few positions as just general staff on ferrys. Haven't gotten any of them though.

I think i'd enjoy working on a ship though. And i have been glancing at some schools where i can get an education in that area.

I'd prefer a captaincy though. But that's a bit out of reach. And my first choice is to be a history teacher.

 

I'll get a sailing boat at some point though. That's something i really want. (And i have a thing for houseboats) 

My grandfather used to work in a shipyard and i've got a vice admiral in my family history.

Nope i am american, but my Opa immigrated from the Netherlands and that's what we always called him.

when i was in high school i worked at a boating marina  that rented out power boats and sail boats.  the manager told me he wanted me to learn sailing and i declined, but in hindsight i really should have taken him up on it as sailing lessons can be expensive.

if you dm me, i can give you a few tips about schools and so on. my dad was one on the top sailors in the up to 65meter yacht class in the world!

I've already looked at the schools in my country. Kind of pointless though. Four years in school and then i'd have to be lucky to get a job

Aye. My job is mostly planning for future availabilities (ship maintenance periods), so haven't had a chance to do any sea trials or be part of an away team yet. Have gotten to travel to San Diego a handful of times as well as Washington (state) and Japan though.

Kool, 

My dad does shipyard work and has had to travel to those places.   He doesn't do sea trials, but, after 20 years in the navy it isn't an issue lol.

I worked for a state park marina renting out boats at one point which I did use occasionally. They ended up paying for my boating license so there's that.  

 

My family does have a power boat but I don't really take it out personally.
