so are you saying windows server 2016 is all i could use on that / the r710?

If you want to do gpu passthrough on windows, its your only option. Linux and esxi can also do this.

so i can use just one OS for all the systems in the house

Don't do this. This will just be a pain. It doesn't save money or power in small deployments, and just is a hassle.

i would like your input on that as well, if you are interested. you have bin a grate help on this mater, thank you.

Don't make a central server. Its a pain, its gonna cost more, be slower, fail often, and just be annoying. Just buy a few desktops. If you want to use them remotely just use remote desktop.

the other day i made a post about a server i had that i was trying to do a 2 gamer 1 cpu /pc nas rig kind of thing. and got some really good advice. so before i go buying the wrong thing again i thought i would reach out and ask for some tips / direction.

now i i know there are a lot of opinions about this. but i would like to find an older server that i can VM or unRAID to do all of this. 1. for the price and 2. for the reliability of the hardware.

i would LOVE to do a costume build, but more then likely go with last years server.

so for my plans,

i would like some thing i can play games on

( tho i am not a graphics snob or really play all that much. just like to be able to. )

a whole home NAS box

( for movies, files, pic's, music and back ups )

home automation / AI

and graphic design

( sketchup make )

light video editing

( would like to do some DIY video to post on YouTube and some family film's )

influences ( video's i have come across )

Under $150 Budget Gaming 8 Core CPU, Motherboard & 16GB RAM

2 Gaming Rigs, 1 Tower - Virtualized Gaming Build Log

Mineral Oil Cooled PC Part 4 - Q&A

Use your Gaming PC's Extra Power as a NAS Ultimate Guide

Unless your running server 2016( w, you can't do gaming vm's.

server 2016 is generally not used because it's just come out, when it's more matured then people will start recommending it

****SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH IT'S REALLY TERRIBLE*****

basically don't do vdi(using vms and remote desktop).

Its more expensive, its gonna be a hassle to use and work with. Just buy cheap desktops.

Desktops will last 10+ years running 24/7

Its gonna cost more to have servers centralized.

Budget?

You also then need thin clients to connect to the server with, adding cost.
