after i saw the 2 and 7 gamer's 1 cpu / pc i wanted to do this my self. so, i looked into what i could get. and for my price range i wasn't going to have much power. so i looked into just getting a Server. and i found this ( IBM 7233 System X3850 M2 ) with 4x 2.40GHz E7450 Hex Core CPU's  and 64GB RAM installed. and came with 2x 146GB 2.5" HDD. but cant seem to get any thing to read the HDD's in raid. now this is my first time trying any thing like this. so i am more then likely doing it all wrong. so any help would be grate.

What OS is installed on the system? I'm good with Windows Server, but if it's Limetech Unraid you might need Linus himself to help lol. Are you trying to put them in a RAID array and it's failing, or are they in a raid array already and the drives aren't showing up in File Explorer?

well i have tried some Linux OS's and VMWare ( witch i got working ) but didnt really understand. i haven't tried windows server yet, cause i dont own it lol. i have tried to put both windows 7 and 8 on it. and i did try the Unraid free trial. but all 3 could / would not see the HDD's wall in raid. from what i have gathered i dont have the right drivers for the raid card. but it seems that they might not make drivers for that kind of thing on this server. so i have bin looking into get a new raid card. but with a price tag of 250$ us up to 500$ us i cant afford that at this time. so like i said its probably some thing i am or am not doing.

You can't do the multi games on one system with this server, you need vt-d support on the cpu, and those chips(or any chip that server can use) don't support it.

If you want multiple users(but no games, do to software limiataion) youcan use multipoint on windows server(try the free trial). Youcan do this in linux but its a pain.

For 400 thats way to much for that system. They should be going for 200 or less. there power hogs and slow.

You can run windows vm's but the gpu is virtualized and will be horrible in any 3d app.

Your not gaming on this.

i have bin thinking that my self for some time now, but have more use for it then gaming. if it cant do that my next thoughts were for some sort of home server nas pf-sense router / add block fire wall. just getting into every thing and starting in the deep end it seams. lol

and the server was 250 ish just had to pay for shipping as well

so, what would be a better server to look into for a VM Gaming rig?

For a gaming rig, you want something like a dell r720, or r5510. A custom build would also work well.

Also with that server in order to power it your paying 60 to 100 a month in power to keep it running idle, and over 120 a month if its under load.

For a gerneral pourpose nas/server. A r710/c2100 would be much cheaper, faster and supports newer features.

i would LOVE to do a custom build, but i sadly can not afford the system i have in mine. so an off the rack server will be best in the long run. i can always repurpose it later.

but Thank You for your help

Don't get a g5 get a g6 or newer. There much lower power and support gpu passthrough.

Id get a dell r5510 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R710-8-Core-2-5-Server-48GB-RAM-PERC6i-iDRAC6-2-Trays-/192039691806?hash=item2cb675261e:g:qowAAOSw4GVYPLXB

Id probably not do a virtualized gaming system. Its not work the hassle, but if you really want to you can. Its normally not work  it money wise and is a main to work with.

Id get rid of that old server. Its gonna cost way to much in power and is slow and old.

For gaming vms, get somthing like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precision-R5500-Dual-Xeon-E5620-4CORE-2-4Ghz-12GB-Ram-2x320GB-SATA-/371856257283?hash=item56945c3103:g:6XsAAOSwFdtX0G1Q

For a generic server for nas/router. Get something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-FS12-TY-C2100-2X-QC-E5506-2-13GHz-NO-HDD-12xTRAYS-16GB-4x4GB-/381744926594?hash=item58e1c54f82:g:ankAAOSw5cNYZCO7

i have about 100$ a month, and saving isnt really an option. if i dont spend it it ell end up going to bills lol.

but the 2 gamers 1 cpu/ pc is what i am trying to do. i cant see paying that much to have a gaming rig on every tv in the house. so i was hoping VMing would let me just get cheep desktops for the tv's / workstation and just use the server for the real power but again i am probably going for some thing that cant be dun. or at least for my price rang lol

thats why i was looking at the hp's they are 100$ and 75$ and one coums with 2 ssd's

Just use steam in home streaming or some other solution.

The problem is your paying much more for power with those cheap server, and there much slower. Buy a better server now, save money on power.

what is this obsession with building a server to play games?!?!?!??!

i'm not going to rant now (thats for later), but i can help you choose a opereating system to use to virtualise the gaming OS's

i will give pros and cons

windows (hyper-v)

pros

  • most likely to get working without further configuration
  • familiar interface (if you have never used anything else expect windows)

cons

  • about $100 for windows home with hyper-v ($200 for pro, $600 for server)
  • not as configurable as linux
  • has less options

unRAID

pros

  • highly configurable
  • simple web interface accessible via any device with a web browser

cons

  • can be overwhelming for new users to set up a virtual machine
  • requires extra time to get the opereating system to see the virtual drives
  • every virtual machine needs a dedicated video card to output video, can't share them

linux

pros

  • highly configurable
  • very little resource use via the host OS
  • many options for virtualisation software

cons

  • if you have never used linux before, it might be overwhelming for you to get used it

****SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH IT'S REALLY TERRIBLE*****

Been married to my wife for 3 years now! Yay!

for me the reason to go server is life span, server's are made to be on all the time. and i can do more with 2 or 3 servers then i can do with 4 or 5 pc's

as for OS's i do know windows better, but this is all fun to me so i would love to find out more about others. whether i end up using then or not.

but i do like unRAID because of needing a GPU for each VM.

and part of all this is so i have a place to play with VM's and different OS's like linux, freeBSD, and there is a new windows alternative i wouldn't mind trying out.  the other is i enjoy graphic design and 3d printing. and would like something that can do that and some light video editing.

so for me the server is my best bet. not JUST to game but because i can do that as well as so much more.

Unless your running server 2016( w, you can't do gaming vm's.

Also look at esxi or xen server for a easy plug and play hypervisor.

so are you saying windows server 2016 is all i could use on that / the r710?

i was planing on going with unRAID. i would really like to get away from windows if i can. i would like to find a good linux. but need some thing simple enough to teach my family how to use. so i can use just one OS for all the systems in the house. and just have a windows 7 and 8 desktop VM for playing games and some graphic design stuff i like to do in my free time.

but i like 5$ a day a lot more then 100$ + a day. lol

i really like the looks of those R710's and a 12 cores fore under 250 cant beet. but i guess they cant read SSD's  with out a new RAID card. and after all this im a bit gun shy about raid cards lol. but i can like with some good HDD's

i am working on another post out lining what my hopes and planes are for the full project. and asking for advice. i would like your input on that as well, if you are interested. you have bin a grate help on this mater, thank you.
