so i started thinking to myself... wondering who would be better, amd or nvidia -

and then it began...

i was looking through nvidia and amd products when i started to come to the conclusion that, even though amd is competing on even grounds with nvidia (nearly) there prices are extremely cheap. they are the meaning behind performance vs dollar.

the conclusion i came to is that nvidia is aiming there cards for editors whether it be professional or not, this is clearly shown with there later cards, 780, 780ti and titan.

while amd is aiming for the general community/gaming community with there cheaper cards. clearly shown with r9 280x, r9 290, r9 290x.

i understand that, if i had the cash, i would be right in there for the new 780ti. its quieter, less hot, and doesnt consume as much power.

but when shopping on a budget, you arent worried with noise or heat or power so of course. so you will be getting best performance per dollar, which is currently r9 290 (beating the gtx 780 by a bit at a much lower price point).

i feel as though, amd is getting shut down by all these high end users because there cards are "too hot" or "too loud" when not taking in to consideration that they are alot cheaper and perform better then 1000 dollar gpus from nvidia.

i dont know about you but, i wouldnt pay 700 nzd for a gpu cooler.

my question to you is do you think that comparing amd to nvidia is silly considering its like comparing intel to amd?

amd is in a different direction to both intel and nvidia.

do you think amd is on the right track to aim for the budget guys(like me)

who want best performance for little dollar?

do you think they are doing very well considering there gaming gpus are competing with professional gpus

1. This is just begging for a flamewar...

2. AMD is always better on a budget.  Usually cost less and deliver better performance, unless you're looking at the highest tier, that being the 780Ti vs 290x.

780Ti outperforms the 290x, but costs significantly more.

There is no objective answer to this question. Simple as that. Especially now that you can't only measure the worth a GPU quantitatively (even with an unlimited budget), as they come with software and hardware features that mean what is best for one person will not be so for the next.

As it stands, it comes down to the sum of an individuals perceived subjective pros and cons for each product at the time they are looking to buy, which is different for everyone. Eg, the fact that Nvida cards use CUDA means nothing to me but for someone else it means Nvidia is their only option.

If that's not the mindset you use when deciding what to purchase then you're doing it wrong. Hence, fanboys are doing it wrong.

AMD RULES...NO...NVIDIA RULES...DAMN YOU RED/GREEN TEAM...Now on a more civil note...as Poliswag said...whatever fits your budget/preferences.

And with that topic....so begins the Third Age of Silicon...and with its arrival...the FAN BOY WARS begin again..continuing the epic struggle of Luke ASSCLOWN AND DARTH ASSMONKEY (yes..its his dad) in a bid to finally put to rest who has the greatest graphic solution of all....maybe Lucas will direct ;)

There should be a separate section for these "polls".  Linus should see to it that any title containing best gpu AMD/Nvidia will automatically go into this....you will find it easy..looks like the recycle bin on windows..

sorry for the confusing but this topic isnt about starting a flame war. just trying to get peoples opinions on what gpus should be used where.

i understand nvidia is higher end and overall better quality. i understand that nvidia can be used for both gaming and professional, but non hard core computer users arent going to  care much about the heat output if they can get high quality performance for cheap, but even hard(er) core computer users would just water cool or wait for a non reference cooler if they were worried about the heat output.. then extreme core users would just buy nvidia..

i also understand that there are some reasons for users to only be limited to just nvidia or just amd..

1. This is just begging for a flamewar...

2. AMD is always better on a budget.  Usually cost less and deliver better performance, unless you're looking at the highest tier, that being the 780Ti vs 290x.
780Ti outperforms the 290x, but costs significantly more.

not my intention :S didnt realise there were so many fan boys..
i understand that nvidia can easily beat amd but the price point makes it almost not worth it for the slight improvement. especially considering that  the r9 290 is better then the gtx 780 (non ti.), even though amd wasnt trying to compete with the gtx 780 ti, the cards are still doing extremely well to keep up with the top nvidia card for such a low price point. (titan is $1700, 780ti is $1250, r9 290x is $1029, gtx 780 is $850, r9 290 is $679).

If that's not the mindset you use when deciding what to purchase then you're doing it wrong. Hence, fanboys are doing it wrong.

im not a fanboy, i might say i prefer one thing over another because of the "quality" rather then the price point, this can easily be shown with intel 1150 socket compared to amds am3+ socket. seriously, amds sockets look cheap as shit. same with there graphics cards, not as just "shit" but just dont have that "professional feel" about them.

im surprised  that amd is able to just crank up the power with there latest cards to be able to compete with nvidia, force  them to drop there prices on even there higher end cards (except titan), then release a lower end card again that can still compete with the gtx 780 which also leads to nvidia releasing the 780ti.

for someone who isnt on a budget, but doesnt care about the heat output, amd is going to be the top choice for performance every time.

Your options are stupidly limited. What if I want to use Nvidia for Profesional and gaming? I dont like AMD. It sounds cheap. I dont care about its performance because Nvidia seems to be ontop anyway.

sorry for the limited options i wrote this at 11 last night.. was in a rush..

i never said nvida couldnt be used for both, thats why they "win" the race in my opinion, i also agree that amd is cheap, but when you think that all they had to do to compete with nvidia is increase the power, crank up the fans and its on the same performance level as nvidia.

the r9 290, can compete and beat with the gtx 780 (when 780ti wasnt out yet). so how does that make nvidia be on top?

with openGL, from what i heard, its going to be better than the cuda count. which will make amd be just as good as nvidia when people realise this..

also. does everyone have to act like a fricking 13 year old girl? like seriously.

fanboyism or not. who cares. this is just a post. its to get peoples opinions. no need to be argumental idiots.

its people like this who ruin posts even more.

the purpose of this topic/poll wasnt exatly to say who has the best gpu nvidia or amd..

but more what is the gpu "best" used for.

nvidia for professional use & gaming

amd for just gaming

the second part of the poll was more personal opinions again which should be

do you think that amd is "heading" in the right direction to be able to compete with nvidia with much lower priced cards.

i understand that, it just doesnt have that feel about it, but that doesnt mean its not an option, i mean the build im hoping to do after christmas is going to have an 8350 and an r9 290 in it..

i say nvidia is more professional because it looks better, it has a better cooler, runs quieter, doesnt have its temp set at 95 degees for example.. the things that amd fails in currently is what is winning it for nvidia.

its still pretty awesome that at the time, amd took the gpu race, was winning against the gtx 780 with there second highest card.. then nvidia releases the 780ti

EDIT let me fix poll..

ah yeah, i agree with that, recently heard that amds openGL may be better then nvidias cuda for certain things, which even more so, levels the playing ground for amd,

not trying to be a fanboy(clearing that out now), but that seals the deal even more for me as im a budget user and want best that i can get
