ok, I admit sometimes I sound very fanboy & I think I love that role. I know it's weird to understand :D

So to be serious now, both Nvidia & AMD have high-end cards. AMD has best bang for buck cards, but now Nvidia also dropped the prices (Thx for AMD). They both have their minuses & pluses. The things I don't like in AMDs R9 290x for ex. too loud, too hot. Yep with aftermaket cooling those problems will be solved, but will they gonna be more expansive? If yes, then it's not best bang for buck when you can get 780 with good temps & little noise. Then again, I like AMD's step in gaming with TressFX feature (which I consider very good feature & will be glad to see future games with it), in green team we have PhysX which for someone it's nothing, but for someone it's another nice feature (including me). If I'd have choice between GT 640 & AMD 7990 for example, of course I'd choose the last one, but all in all, if choose from red or green team, my voice goes in green.

I just hope you realize that GTX780TI is no church mouse when it comes to noise either anymore its a 5-6db difference thats it between them now.

and as far as wattage and heat generation they are also much much hotter than the 780gtx and the titan now.

so be a fanboy all you want but don't ignore the truth of the matter.

as far as aftermarket solutions if its just a non reference cooler change and not a non reference board design with more phases then the price usually is not that much difference and usually at most 50$ and typically only 25-30$ difference you also forget the 290x performance gains from using a better cooler somewhere in the 20%FPS improvement range with Arctic's Accelero Xtreme III for instance and the DCU2 and Windforce3 really are not that far off that cooler either.

by the way fanboys rub people the wrong way because often they spout things without the proper education or understanding on a subject I enjoy cards from both sides but i tend to weigh things fairly in my decision making.

^ if amd offers better performance at a better price great.

if nvidia can do the same with better temps awesome. but so far nvidia isnt succeeding in low prices..

as for the non reference cooler on the r9 290/x, linus is saying that one degree difference can be an extra frame.. if you can get a much better cooler, you can keep over clocking the card until it hits 95 degrees again.. (unless voltages are insane..)

i definately know what my choice is going to be

Nice to see an actual discussion for the most part.

Now before i begin, as a Fellow New Zealander targeting another Fellow NZer i want you to look at all my components picked out ON A STUDENT BUDGET mind you and take this into heavy consideration for everything i say hereafter.

Considering the prices at this current point in time for AMD/NVidia there is alot not only to consider now but in terms of what is right around the corner. No flaming BS or this is better etc etc here are the facts!

NVidia and Intel are sitting on their asses technologically, but living the high life financially. Looking at the stocks and revenue for both companies clearly indicates their R&D are up the ying yang and they are ROLLIN in the moolah.

It's exactly what was said on the WAN show a few weeks back where if Nvidia truly wanted to be the KING of the GPu market then the 780ti would have been released as the Titan, the Titan as the 780 and the 760 (Which i have now) would be the 780...but that would be a terrible business model and unfortunuately their performance figures are just so damned good that Nvidia can AND WILL charge whatever the hell they want AND HAVE for the better part of this year.

Now thinking back to the launch of the Titan, that card still retails for 1799 here on computer lounge, the 780 was 1299 last week and has seen the 780 drop down to $890 JUST from the 780ti's release and seen the Ti priced at a 'ironic' 1299 NZD. Now for many US/CAN/EURO peeps reading...YES that's nearly 2k or damned closed to that we pay regularly on GPus as they enter our shores and by a stretch they are financially challenging. But i pose this question to those who claim performance is king. What about all those people who dropped 2k on the titan at launch, then saw the 780 figures and now see the Ti figures. This is the reality of what Nvidia does now, just gotta accept it.

I understand the facts of things getting better over time but in the space of a year? I can't talk as i WANT a 780Ti bad but i'm waging an inner war with myself for my next build.

However when looking at this compared to AMD here in NZ. R9 290 for $679.00? Are you serious? 780 performance for half the RRP is was AT THE START OF THE YEAR! What part of Value is not clear to us at this point? That is AMD seriously throwing us gamers a bone and one we should appreciate at best TBH. Hell i want one, but if noise will be an issue then i'll go buy a silent chassis if that's what it take. Kinda sick of getting 'To the point' components when you have AMD sitting here motivated to bring the best they can possibly do for the best price they can possible do when compared to the other two players in this game making the rules as they go.

I don't wanna rant on too much but suffice to say i'm looking at 8320s, R9 290s and 280Xs and looking at my Haswell build with the SC760 and wondering exactly how long this 'performance for the dollar' is actually going to last. Being fair to the fact that 4k is still WAYS off for NZ.

:) Hope this gives you HEAPS to think on man. But nonetheless massive thumbs up for going AMD, stick with them for now and come back to this path in 3-4 years from now is what i would recommend to you.

discussion is what i long for :L

the prices in nz are crazy, for a 3k budget usd, you can get 2 780s and custom water cool with an extreme processor, in nz for the 3k you can barely get one 780, an 8350 and custom water cool..

4k isnt going to be an option for us for a very long time. and even then, itll cost over 1k for it

amd is also definately my choice for my comp
