RX 480 vs R9 Fury

Matt28

So I just built a new PC a few months ago, and I'm looking to upgrade my monitor. I've decided on this LG Ultrawide one, but in order to take advantage of the full 144hz, I need a new graphics card. I was thinking about getting a GTX 1060 or 1070, but the monitor has Free sync, so I need to go AMD. I have narrowed it down to two graphics cards:

RX 480 Strix 8GB: $215 after rebate

R9 Fury 4GB: $240 after rebate

I've done some research, and the Fury seems to perform better in games, but the 480 has 8gb of vram and it costs $25 less. Which one should I get?

Here's my current setup:

i5 6600

16 gb ddr4

GTX 760

550w Power Supply

And finally, if I really wanted to get the cheapest deal, I could go with this 4gb RX 480 for only $165 after rebate.

I'd say Fury. You may have to turn down AA in some games to be safe about the VRAM but it performs at least 10% better.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Just incase you needed any more reinforcement...

The fury is by far the better card.

4gb is enough for 1080p-1440p in the overwhelming majority of games, and as @DocSwag said its as easily remedied as turning down your AA a little bit.

Chiming in here.

Fury by far. Upgrade to Vega when it comes out if you want.

Was in the same situation as you, as I had to replace my problematic 390 with a new GPU, but couldn't afford a 1070. Plus I have a Freesync monitor too.

Thanks guys! Seems like it's an obvious choice then

Just because the monitor has free sync doesn't mean you can't use an nvidia card.  You won't get the be edit of the frame syncing, but you will still have a great play experience.

You have to use V-Sync though, which in most games will limit you to 60FPS.

You are actually paying nearly $700 for a monitor that basically only displays 1080p? Your picture will look terrible spread along 34 inches.

Lel. You've clearly never used a VRR monitor. Just like 144 Hz, you can never go back after using it.

So I know that all of you are recommending the Fury, but in the video posted by Droidbot, the guy reccomends having a 600w or 700w power supply, but I only have a 550w 80+ bronze power supply, will this be a problem?

What PSU is that exactly? 550w will be fine with the fury as long as it's a good unit

Had the same dilemma, I went with the R9 Fury. Awesome for 1440P gaming. The 4GB of HBM isn't much of a bottleneck, never had any issues.

Why Vsync will limit to 60fps if this monitor have 144hz vertical refresh rate?

you should be fine with a 550w psu.

350w average on the fury x with a 6700k, should be lower for the fury and you can undervolt it if you're still scared about power usage. also, if you dare, see if you can unlock the compute units for an air-cooled fury x.

Guys remember the HBM works much more efficiently then traditional GDDR5, making it better in vram demanding situations - it's why the Fury X performed strong in 4k

Uwotm8?

I'm not buying the monitor now, waiting till I can find it for around $500 and not $700. And I don't need a Titan X or something to run it because it's only 1080p, but I still want something that can get close to that 144hz.

I believe the display will function at 144Hz even on iGPU

But in most games, the RX 480 won't be able to do 144fps at 2560x1080

The LG display uses a TN panel anyway, and at 34" it will have pretty poor pixel density

Why not a regular 1080p 144Hz Freesync display? They are much cheaper.

I've heard lots of good things about ultrawide monitors, thought it would be a nice upgrade from my current 1080p x 1920 60hz 5ms monitor

Here's a couple reviews I watched, and neither said that the pixel density was a problem.
