Don't really know what to do/what parts for a Server/NAS

DarkBlade2117

So just looking for general suggestions...

Note: go big or go home, but on a budget-ish : tl;dr kind of at bottom

So I have a 2nd PC I use to run an MC server on atm. I'd like to be able to do various other things on it, as much as my 6700k is nice, when rendering a video and what not I can't really do much else other than browse the web ect. I am in no need to sit out and pump out 4k60fps videos on a day-by-day basis but I would like to have a bit of power to it. I don't expect it to everything perfectly and will be very jerry rigged but never really done something like this.

Current 2nd PC currently has a Athlon II x4 630, 16GBs of DDR3 and a CX450m. These are the main parts. I WAS just going to upgrade it to a Phenom II x6 1055T or something but then I had the thought..

Why not get some LGA 771 dual-socket motherboard, some old quad-core xeons for $15-$20, 32GB of DDR2 ect and just mod some ugly ass case together for it.

Now I am second guessing myself... the CPUs slightly slower than an i7-2600. They are about 40% better than a 1055T I believe. Would cost me about $150 at best after considering the cost of a case and heat sinks for the CPUs. The 1055T would cost about $50 at max. If I go with a new setup, I can easily sell the Athlon II x4 630 and mobo for like $50.

TL:DR

Then... a bigger thought came to my mind... I already have everything really except a Mobo and CPU if I go for a newer setup but I don't know what to look for. I know things like E5-2670's are like $70 which WOW! Ya I would do that if LGA2011 weren't like $150. So right now

Phenom 1055t: $40

Dual-Socket LGA771 Board, 32GB of DDR2, Xeon E5472's/Similar and a case: ~$125

Xeon E5-2670/Similar and LGA2011 and Case: $220

Now here is the craziest one of them all... and I think this one makes the most sense... Go LGA1366. Dual socket OEM boards seem to be Like $70-$90 which seems fairly reasonable and within my price range. The mid-range 6c Xeons seem to go for about $35-$40. Question is... I have a CX450M which only has 1 8-pin CPU connector. The PSU itself can handle dual say X5660's just fine but it just doesn't have the connector. Plus, can I run the dual-socket board say I can only fine one X5660 for now, can it load just fine without a CPU in the 2nd socket? I don't really want to buy another PSU. Can a Silent Base 800 mount an EATX board? If not, rip another $40.

Probably about $120 I'll end up spending if I do this after selling the parts.

EDIT- oh and ya, want to have a NAS at one point

An hour or so ago I found an Intel X79 board for $60 (working). If you keep looking you can find X79 motherboards for as low as $50!

Where... I see them $150 minimum.

Still, how does it compare to a dual 6c/12t Xeon on LGA1366?

It was a bid.... If you bid on X79 motherboards you can get them for less than $150....

I think that the 2 Xeons will be better for server use.....

Have you watched any of those bids to the moment they were sold? The last 1-30 minutes those bid prices start jacking up.

I would recommend dual Xeon L5640's on socket LGA 1366, they're 6 cores 12 threads and use only 60w's of power each. Pair that with a Tyan S7012 motherboard and you're off to the races with a perfect, inexpensive server.

Then get 2 LGA1366 Xeons! The only problem is power consumption, because it is pretty high...

Ya, seen those and they make more sense. Thanks for the suggestion on the mobo, cheapest one I've seen so far.

Only concern is the CX450M only has 1 8-pin CPU connector... don't mind using an adapter or whatnot if I need though. Checked and sadly SB800 doesn't support EATX mobo's.. Will end up just selling it to put towards another case then.

I used to own this motherboard and two X5550's which draw much more power each and I used a splitter on a 500W EVGA PSU and had no issues. Since this rig will draw significantly less under load (about half as much) you'll be all set with the CX450M.

Ohh ya, forgot about splitters. I figured the 8-pin can handle 120w just fine just didn't know how it would work. You got any case suggestions that'll fit the EATX mobo? Looks aren't really an issue. Would prefer a plain black case but doesn't really matter

The NZXT S340 surprisingly can fit a EATX motherboard if you take out the cable management thing, other than that are you looking for a server case or a more traditional desktop case?

I mean, it can be a plain black box for all I care. I'd mount it in my dresser if I wouldn't get bitched at by my parents for sawing out holes in it to mount fans for airflow

I use this case, works pretty damn well.

ngl... you are really tempting me to rig one of my dresser draws into a server mount for this
