what's ryzen

AMD is releasing a new CPU architecture on February 28th, which will most likely be available to buy early march, if they don't have any sales shortages.

It's so close to launch that the rumors basically confirm it will offer 8Core 16Thread CPUs for about $500, at about the same performance and clockspeed as intel.

this is basically offering the same performance intel is offering for $1000, but for half the price.

if you wait until march, you can get a MUCH more powerful CPU for less money, which will free up more of your budget to go with a more powerful GPU, which will in turn give you a better system overall.

Nope. the new AMD CPUs come with completely new sockets, new motherboards, and new chipsets.

It's said that Ryzen will offer 6800K performance for about $260. as you know, your 6800K cost quite a bit more than that.

Well, he said he's going to wait for Ryzen.

but for a $1500 build, it should have an SSD. Plus a 7700K wouldn't hurt either.

You're wrong- the prices are even better. According to several leaked sources, the 8-core 16-thread chips start at $320 with the 3.7 GHz R7 1700 65w CPU. Motherboards will likely be as cheap as $60 or less at launch.

The 6-core 12-thread chips start at $230.

That's honestly way better than I thought, but people say the IPC will be about at Haswell/Broadwell levels, so the $320 chip might be slightly worse than the 6900K.

Still would be 1/2 to 1/3rd of the price for at least 85% of the performance, might clock higher as well

Well, AMD also offers overclocking on their cheapest AM4 motherboards like the B350 chipset boards, and ASUS listed a fairly solid one (One of their 'PRIME' motherboards) for just $70. The $320 R7 1700 is only a 65W TDP chip with a clock speed of 3.7 GHz. You should have no problem pushing it if the motherboard has good power delivery. Hell, 65 watts is the TDP of a Core i5 6400.

Yep.

Plus, AMD's turbo boost thing should do great with such a low TDP, even if you pair it with it's (actually probably pretty good) stock cooler.

B350 isn't the cheapest board though. even though it's incredibly cheap compared to intel's X99 boards, the A320 is lower end. (and will probably be cheaper)

I believe the B350 is the cheapest board with support for overclocking, but I could be wrong.

Also, 3.7 GHz is not the base clock. That's the boost clock. To get any higher than their rated turbo frequency, you'll have to overclock it, pushing both the multiplier and the voltage and ending up with a TDP way beyond that ridiculous 65-watt rating.

I'm very excited, but I don't want to get ahead of myself. I'm sure companies like DigitalFoundry and our very own LinusTechTips, as well as smaller review channels like Hardware Unboxed and JayzTwoCents will have reviews and overclocking results for us when the NDA is up later this month/early next month.

I just wish linus would do a lot more tests with more depth to them given the size of the team and channel, didn't even check the free-sync quality on the past few displays

Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree. However, it appears their comaratively simplified content is designed not to confuse neophytes in their audience. I'd say it's more palatable to the beginner, although their presentation has become a little more sensationalist (still, forgoing Freesync tests is sin).

Perhaps an alternate channel with a more in-depth testing process for products would be a good supplement. They could even call it LinusDepthTips
