How many CALs do I need?

Hi everyone,

 

I'm trying to wrap my head around how many CALs I need for this situation. Attached is the network diagram. 

 

We will have 4 workstations in the HQ Office and 1 mobile clinic connecting with VPN via a SonicWALL TZ300. We will have Linux on the server running VirtualBox for the 3 virtual machines. The Web applications VM will be running Linux, and we will have Windows Server 2016 VM's for the Active Directory and Terminal Server VM's.

don't use virtaul box, use kvm on linux.

 

What edition of windows server, id use essentals and then you don't get cals.

No idea but wouldn't the place you purchase the CATS from know?  They should be familier with ms license policies.

Windows Server 2016. These are zero clients. I don't think essentials supports remote desktop services

Yeah, that's probably all I'll have to do. I just wanted to get pricing down beforehand because it's for a client and I need to pitch the price to him

I think the remote system needs 1 user CAL too for terminal server.

 

BTW, when you purchase Windows Server 2016, are extra licenses cheaper?

I think the cals for remote servers are by user, not host server or client system

 

For server licences, when you get standard server you can cun 2 vm's per licence. Datacenter can run unlimited vms on one host with the lincense.

I don't remember which member knows a lot more about this. I think it's was one of the mods.

With 2016 you have 2 types of CALS, Device and User. Get user when your have more user than device. Get device when you have more device than users.

Then I heard every devices needs a CAL to talk to the server? So if your place has like 10 printers, you will need to buy 10 devices CALS, which imo sound ridiculous and makes no sense or I make absolutely no sense.
