Hi,

My computer (upstairs) is connected to the router with an ethernet cable and the other computer (downstairs) is connected through wireless. The router is next to the downstairs computer and my pc is on the other side of the house. Once this other computer is turned on I cannot use the internet due to the really slow speeds. Is there a way to 'split' the internet speed equally, or prioritise my connection?. The max speed my house receives is about 230KB/s

Thanks

your router might just have very poor range

Does this make a difference even if i'm using a Wired connection?

Wither you have bad range or your router can handle that many users at the same time switch is unusual. Or Too much usage from each computer might be slowing your speed overall. Most likey your 3rd computer is too far away from the router itself.

it might have poor quality ports, or uses all its power to drive the wireless

Read up on some maximum power outputs of wireless.

Anyway, other than all ISP routers being crap, routers don't differentiate from wired and wireless connections because its not their job that's why you can prioritize traffic to a specific host for a specific type of traffic in any way you like, but i doubt that many ISP routers have that feature, speed limiting should be available though so try that. Since you are getting 250 kbps speeds i would say don't bother changing anything it won't help much.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

Check your routers IP for settings, I think mine had some kind of "prioritise gaming and video" bollocks, might wanna try that out. Also a very handy program is Netlimiter 3, it will allow you to restrain the speeds the other pc gets so you get higher speeds (don't tell the one using that pc that though :P). Also WiFi is just as good as ethernet in most cases because most people don't use that much traffic on their (W)LAN
