So I just bought a I7 7700k and Asus Prime Z270-AR combo from Microcenter. I've run into a few issues and am wondering if something might be defective.

Specs:

7700k

Asus Prime Z270-AR

EVGA 1080

EVGA 650G2

GSkill 16GB RAM

Samsung 960 EVO 500GB M.2

Crucial 1TB MX300 M.2

Put together everything fine. Installed Windows 10 fine. Ran over night downloading my games from Steam, Origin, Uplay.

In the morning I restarted and it started to randomly hang on POST. USB Over Current warning came up once. Getting into the UEFI would freeze after a few seconds. I could not reliably boot the system. I could boot into WIndows if I unplugged the power cable every time. Otherwise, it would just hang on POST.

Replaced motherboard today. Works okay and will reliably boot. But, if I change any CPU overclock settings, it will go back to hanging on POST or not even display anything. Enabling XMP works fine. Now I'm wondering if my CPU is bad. Running AIDA64 stability test right now and it is running, but the mouse lags to where I can't click stop. I've run AIDA64 on my 5820k system and I did not experience this behavior. I ran 3DMark and it got through it just fine.

After my monitor went to standby and I woke it back up, mouse behavior is back to normal lol.

Is it a Z170 or Z270?

A faulty usb device might cause the over current error to appear

Lagging mouse, need to install them USB drivers for your board

Change CPU settings results in system won't POST.  Did that happen to the original board too or you haven't noticed it?

270

Lagging mouse after starting AIDA64 stress test. Stopped lagging after the screen went to sleep and woke back up.

Change CPU settings happened on the previous board too

Can you tell us more about the overclock?  Clockspeed, voltage, cache speed, memory and the like?

Mouse lagging while the CPU is fully loaded can happen.

Both boards does the same thing, then it's your processor.
