Oh hello guys what's up?

Stuck in a little bit of a dilemma right now. So I'm currently rocking a 6600 with a B150 mobo. Originally I was going to go with a 6600k but I snagged a 6600 for only $160 last fall. But lately I've been wanting to upgrade and contemplating selling my 6600 and mobo, and going with a K build.

Until today. Someone came to me with an old i7-4790k. FOR ONLY $210. The glory of this, I have an old Asus Maximus VII Gene mobo lying around. But I'm struggling because I haven't heard much but people having troubles lately with their 4790k's.

So, do I go with a newer 6600k/7600k setup and sell my old Asus board, or sell my 6600 pair and go with the 4790k? Just seeing what everyone's thoughts are

4790K is almost the same as the 6700K, which is almost the same as the 7700K, so it's still really good thanks to intel's lack of innovation

I just got a 4790K.  It's an amazing CPU.  The only thing is, even if you don't plan on overclocking, you'll still need a custom cooler.  It runs really hot out of the box.

Turn off hyper-threading (guides online). Dropped my temp by a few degrees.

If I got one, I would probably delid it and put new compound on and such. I've seen 10-25 degree differences, especially now that the chips are older and the compound is old as dirt.  I have a cryorig H7 that is amazing, but yes that is a current concern

I haven't had any troubles with it, they probably have motherboard troubles rather than cpu as that degrades while CPU's do not, their either work as intended or don't.(generally)

Better yet lower the Vin value as it is to high by base on z97 boards often enough, similar improvement temp wise

Sorry to spam your thread but you should be able to keep it under/at 75 with the H7 though will only be able to set it around 4.5 or 4,6 clock wise with that temp

then, in this instance, what would be the point of buying the 4790k? If I'm going to turn off hyper-threading, than I'll just buy a newer 6/7600k

The extra cache and clock speed do a lot more than the hyper-threading in most games.

No no, you're fine. This is why I started it. I know what each cpu is capable of, but I just want to see what everyone has to say and their input.

Now is that OC'ing it to 4.5 with turbo off? Or Setting it so the turbo hits around 4.5-4.6

Flat 4 core OC, turbo negated custom power in settings, without the power tweaks it will hit 77-78 with summer ambient temps

Oh and I use offset voltages rather than flat constant ones

If you have a Z board for it and can get it for $210 don't even think twice. Sell the 6600 and B150 for more than that and you're golden.

Well I also stream a little, and do a very heavy amount of photo editing. Not so much video, but heavy photo. That's why if we are talking about turning of hyper-threading, I would rather spend the money on a newer i5 rather than an older gen 4790k

That hurts performance though.  The first thing I did was undervolt it.  I saved 10C that way.  When I bought a Hyper 212 Evo I saved another 20C.

In the end, I'll be roughly at the same amount of money. If I go the 6600k/6700k route, I'll be selling the Asus board, and my current setup, and go for a new build and be at about the same as if I get the 4790k+ram and sell my current build.

What cpu are you rocking? I may have to contact you in the future for some tid-bits on over OC. I've overclocked in the past, but it was very minor and I didn't tweak much but the speeds. Mainly because I didn't need to.

If you're using Photoshop, hyper-threading doesn't help but a few functions.

Not really. It truly depends on what we're talking about. Quite a few games only see an improvement of a few Hz with HT. It literally becomes a useless variable in some games since the extra logical cores don't actually process data, but schedule it (which can be negated by the extra cache and bandwidth).

I use my computer for more than gaming lol.  However, hyperthreading can make a big difference.  Just not always in a good way. In Crysis, it sometimes gives a 20fps boost

In GTA V (I didn't watch the rest of the video) it often hurts performance by 20fps

Honestly, even if you leave it at stock speeds it's got incredible performance.  It's the highest end LGA 1150 CPU to date.
