What resolution?

2560x1440 and 1080p120 need dual link. Normal 1080 can run just fine on a single link

I'm using it as a second monitor. It's 1600x1200 (lol..)

PS: I'm using a 1080p monitor as my main monitor.

Do I have to worry about any dangers? Or is this perfectly safe?

It's perfectly safe. In fact, I'm using a single-link DVI-I connector on my 560 Ti which is using a dual-link connector. All you're doing is removing pins...the electrical compatibility doesn't change.

if the display has a dual-link dvi-D port, chances are it requires dual-link DVI-D, my two BenQ's like to do really funky things with single link cables :P

that said, no, there's no "danger", as in nothing will permanently break, it'll just look funky and make you conclude you need a dual link cable :P

I have an extra question:

Do I need to turn off my computer in order to unplug my monitor?

No, display cables since ≈1990 onward have been hot-pluggable.

I have a GPU with a DVI-D Dual Link port. I want to connect that GPU to a monitor with the same DVI-D Dual Link port.

Can I use a DVI-D Single Link cable? Will there be any danger if I do so?

Dual-Link DVI ports are compatible with both Single-Link and Dual-Link cables, this is part of the design and is not "beyond spec" or anything like that. There is no danger.
