PSU fan swap

About a year ago i did a mod to my psu which i dont know was stupid or what.. or wait i know i was stupid, but basically what i did was replacing the PSU fan because i thought it was too noisy. I bought the CM Silent pro gold 800w 80+ gold, and it wasnt silent at all. So in my frustration i just decided to void the warrenty and replace the fan with whatever i could find. Good job brain. The fan i replaced it with was just a standard case fan from fractal.

Now to the actual question:

Did i doom my psu by installing a casefan in it? Will it overheat and destroy all of my hardware?

I haven't used the psu since i did it (about a year ago) since i was too scared that it wasn't cooling enough. I've recently started thinking about using it again since i need more wattage for a SLI setup. What do you guys think? Am i fine, or should i replace it with a air pressure optimized fan like a noctua? Or maybe just put the original fan back into it? Or even throw it away and cry in a corner?

Thx in advance.

I was just thinking about doing the same thing, my gx650 is loud, at first i thought it was the gpu but its the psu making all the noise.

If you got the fan in there then it's probably not going to overheat. I would be more concerned about something shorting and blowing up or creating a fire since you've gone in the PSU and messed with things (I assume the fan was hard wired and you had to cut the cables etc) either way you have significantly increased the possibility of damaging all your hardware. I certainly wouldn't use a PSU that has been tampered with.

It's fine, though I personally don't trust Coolermaster PSUs too much. As long as there's some air moving, it should be fine

Shorting? On a plastic fan with insulated cables, and a (probably) standard (plastic) fan header?

Yes the warranty is void, but I don't think it's gonna short if he did an OK job of it. Like, as long as he didn't use a hammer

The fan was connected via 3 pin connector, and all i had to do was remove the little piece of glue that held the 3 pin in place.

Well yeah I said thats if the fan was hard wired in and he had to cut the power cables to uninstall it. That would leave plenty of potential for shorting.

Should be fine if your really worried get a corsair sp fan, linus keeps saying how he uses sp's in the role of af's because the airflow is so close and his google docs seem to back it up

The fan was connected via 3 pin connector, and all i had to do was remove the little piece of glue that held the 3 pin in place.

In that case, as long as you didn't ESD all over everything, you should be fine

(If you did discharge over everything, it probably won't turn on... I'm talking about electrostatically ofc)

I have seen multiple people doing that because the psu is fine but the fan has died, easy fix for a problem. Chances are that the fractal fan is just as good @Butterfish

I am thinking about doing the same thing. Are there any parts that will fry me or my hardware when I turn it back on again?

avoid the backside of the PSU mainboard. Avoid the large round things. Capacitors can melt the tip of a screwdriver. Avoid always.
