Underclocking?

Does anyone here have any experience with underclocking a cpu for a better thermal performance in small formfactor pcs (planning a sleek build in a Lian Li PC-O5X)??? I wonder how the temperatures vary in lower clockspeeds. The reason for that is that I don't want to use a closed loop liquid cooling solution, but rather a low profile aircooler by noctua.

Just get a lesser CPU with less TDB. Don't waste your money on a more capable CPU just to bring its performance down to that of a cheaper skew.

sometimes just reducing the voltage manually can help quite a bit

I think it is possible to limit the BCLK multiplier in your PC.  But like the person above said, you might as well just buy a cheaper one.

Ok great, thank you guys. I already have a i7 6700k (a friend got himself a xeon workstation and sold it to me for 100$), but I will try lowering the voltage as you guys suggested and probably will look into fiddling with the bclk. Thanks for the input

the 6700k can be run on air no problem. One of my rigs is running a 6700k @ 4.9ghz on a hyper 212 evo temps hover 65c-75c while gaming. i replaced the stock fan with a noctua ippc3000rpm fan though to make it possible.

 

edit: although load rarely goes above 50%-60% otherwise it would likely overheat. sounds stupid, its just how i set this particular computer up for a certain application
