So, before I get those comments, yes, I know I should have had the data backed up and I was in the process of selecting new hardware for that, but... here I am.

The hard drive is a Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB HDD. The drive seems to spin up and then slow down. I got it to spin up fully once and it was recognized by the system, but I couldn't access it because it failed before it was able to be accessed. What's also weird is that the hard drive seems to beep. It only does this about 50% of the time when I try to spin it up. It's always just one short beep. I tried checking Seagate's web site for beep codes, but I couldn't find anything. Also, I am 100% sure it's the hard drive itself beeping. It's not the motherboard or anything else. I even attached it to an external hard drive dock and when I try to power it through that, the beep can be heard coming directly from the HDD.

If anyone could recommend a solution to try to get it working again at least long enough to get the data off, it'd be greatly appreciated.  Also, any relatively cheap data recovery services would be appreciated as well. I'll also attempt to contact Seagate's customer service to see if they have any solution and will update this post accordingly. If anyone wants any additional information, just let me know.

Thanks.

If it's failed and really need it, best you bring it the professionals, who hopefully won't mess things up. Also, was your mobo able to access it the last time you tried (don't do it again, you might break the HDD even more).

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

My motherboard was able to access it as of yesterday. The drive actually failed when my computer was running, I believe. I left my computer on overnight, and when I came back in the morning, the drive was inaccessible and not recognized anymore. When I tried rebooting my system, it was not recognized by the BIOS, and I tried swapping out sata and power cords to see if that was the issue, and it still didn't work.

As for the data on it, it isn't SUPER irreplaceable, but replacing all of that data will be a chore, and there are some things on there that I can probably never get back at all. So, a data recovery solution would be worth it to me for the right price. It's weighing that cost against how important the data is to me, but if I can find a solution on my own, I'll obviously gladly take it.

Your best bet is a bootable linux environment as a last resort, such as gParted or PartedMagic. If those can't detect the drive, it's off to expensive professional data recovery land. Professional data recovery can run anywhere from $400-$2000 USD depending on the damage sustained to the drive. If you're unsure, trying to save it one more time yourself could be worth it, but will shorten the lifespan of whats left on the drive.

Are you familiar with booting into a USB based live linux OS?

someone recently just asked pretty much the same thing and here is what the comments were on that persons post. I'm being lazy and don't want to re-type everything again, but I do think it could help you in your situation as well.
