It really depends on your GPU (or your willingness of upgrading in the near future). If you have a 1070 or better definitely get a 1440p monitor. If not, maybe opt for a 1080p one or you'll have to dial down those details in game

Is it really worth upgrading to a 1080p monitor from my current 1680x1050? I was thinking of skipping 1080p and going straight 1440p after the summer when I have the money.

1440p all the way. More relevant for future titles and you'll love how your games will look.

If you've got the money, go for 1440p. It looks much better. However 1440p needs a decent GPU. So 1440p depends on your GPU, desired framerates, and the games you want to play. A 1060 3GB or RX 470 should be fine with most of today's games if you are looking for the cheapest cards with what I'd consider a playable experience. If you are looking for 100+ fps don't use anything less than a gtx 1080.

Check this out. I know it's about whether or not a fury x is still worth buying today, but there are framerates for all the cards I mentioned in many games with the latest drivers as of Jan 29. Plus all the benchmarks are done in 1440p.:

CPU: i7 4790k @ 4.7 GHz

GPU: XFX GTS RX580 4GB

Cooling: Corsair h100i

Mobo: Asus z97-A

RAM: 4x8 GB 1600 MHz Corsair Vengence

PSU: Corsair HX850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite Tempered glass edition

Display: LG 29UM68-P

Keyboard: Roccat Ryos MK FX RGB

Mouse: Logitech g900 Chaos Spectrum

Headphones: Sennheiser HD6XX

OS: Windows 10 Home

I was a 1680x1050p user myself, and I can assure you that it is close to the same thing of 1080p you will not notice a worth increase in image quality going from a 1050p60hz to a 1080p60hz, you should try going a bit further with either 2560x1080p or 1440p to get the actual upgrading feeling.

I have the R9 280 atm but by the time I get a 1440p i'll definitely have at least a 1070 or VEGA equivalent.

I would go with a 1440p monitor myself. As an owner of a 1440p monitor, its well worth the upgrade over 1080p. Although gaming is harder to run, its so much better in productivity that it makes up for it. The colors tend to be much more accurate and the increased screen real estate makes doing work more enjoyable.
