I think you really have to get into the book you're reading in order to enjoy it. that means if you have to temporarily cut yourself off from outside stimuli, such as your phone, the LTT forums, etc. find a quiet place to read, maybe like a library, or Starbucks. you don't have to cut yourself off for long.. maybe set a few hours to read, then read more later.. or binge-read if you're getting into it. it helps to set a nice little goal daily or weekly

or it just means you're not liking the book you're reading.. is it fiction or non-fiction?

if you're the sort who likes to listen to music often, then pick instrumental tracks with no vocals.. also low BPM.

It's alright, I don't thin I've read a whole book under my own steam since I was in high school. Reaing isn't massively important.

Bull shit. Reading is extremely important. It builds vocabulary and teaches kids how to read and write. Don't you ever say that reading isn't important. It's what separates Humans from animals.

To the OP. Try to read an action filled non-fiction book.

Obviously reading itself is important but reading books is becoming less and less important.

Still false. You try learning quantum mechanics through a movie. Reading is the only evidence we have of our pasts. It MUST be kept, it MUST be read.

well like i said earlier, try to get away from external stimuli for a short while, see how that works out.. read elsewhere, but a place that you find comfortable.

but you shouldn't force yourself to read.. you either like the book or don't. unless it's a mandatory book for school, then you have to read it lol.

I learned about it in lectures when doing my Chemistry degree. Didn't need to read a book all the way through for that ;)

And do you remember it now? How, say, would you go about refreshing yourself? A... I dunno... book perhaps? ;)

And if you made it through a PhD degree without looking at a book, then you must be a genius. Undergrad was a joke. :)

Well, I guess that I don'tt remember what I've forgotten from my degree :P

Besides, reading is the least efficient way of absorbing information. You learn much more from it being read to you or watching a video on it. It did become a problem as I progressed into my third year because much of the stuff I was doing didn't have a massive amount about it online. Still got a 2:1 so that's alright.

I am the same way. I simply cannot sit and read a book. I have ADD and OCD and I learn things best by doing, vs reading.

The only way I can actually get through a book is by listening to audiobooks. It also helps if I'm doing some kind of mundane activity that uses very little concentration while listening to keep my body busy (so I don't fidget). Like cleaning or building something or driving or while I work (I do CAD drawings as my job).

Don't feel bad if you can't sit and read a book, you're not alone. And trust me, it's not enough that the book catches your interest. I've started books that I know I would like and couldn't get through them unless I listened to the audiobook. I love books but HATE that I can't sit and read them like my wife can. lol

Read " the embers of illenial." you'll like it. You have to care about a book to read it. If I'm into it I chew through a book and a half a day. But if I'm not it takes me months to get to page 10.

I disagree.  I've found reading most effective for studying my subject in college.  I've found documentaries being too long and drawn out for the amount of information I desired, and while discussions were quite excellent with refining what I read, it still proved to be a bit light on information density.

OP: Books seems to be interesting all things considered.  Not my preferred genre honestly, but I'd find a nice quiet place, and just read, read, read, read.  Try putting yourself into the character's shoes, live through the book.  Books for me remain the best form of escape from reality.  (When they are well written.)  On the other hand, you could try a different book. If you aren't hooked within the first chapter or so, maybe it's time to move on?

Just had a bit of a laugh when "C++ for dummies.. The musical!" popped into my head

On the actual topic though. Reading isn't really something to force yourself to do.

I love reading personally. The mark of a good author is the ability to draw you in to the story and giving you enough information to create a mental image of the world.

I'm also a writer. (Nothing published) so i read quite a lot to pick up a few tips and tricks here and there.

As others have suggested you might try an audio book or just a different book.
