Best way to get 1TB of SSD

ChuckMaurice

Last year I went full SSD on my desktop rig with a 512GB Crucial MX200, which was at maybe 220$ at the time.

Now I find myself a bit cluttered but don't want to use classic HDDs unless absolutely necessary. I think 1TB would be enough for me as I currently store:

- roughly 200GB of games (Steam, Origin, Blizzard)

- 500GB of video editing content, including project files, 4K raw material etc...

- 100GB of music and personal photos, media stuff.

Adding another 512GB SSD to the rig would be the right way, but I don't want to bother on "which drive do I put this game/video project". Since the Fusion Drive days on Mac I find it easier to have one single partition.

I know, RAID0 wouldn't add much performance to the SSDs, but is it a good solution to "fuse" two SSDs into a single partition? Is there any other solution? Should I ditch the current SSD and just buy a 1TB SSD (about 300$, Crucial MX300?)

Also:

- In case of RAID0, is having the same SSD model important?

- In case of RAID0, will having a SSD more worn out than another (new) model

Id get a single 1tb hdd.

FOr raid 0, you will have to clone the drive to the new ssd, and that can be a pain to work with.

Cloning is not really an issue as I can easily format and restore everything but games, and download games again.

for raid, you don't have to use the same drives, but its normally reccomended.

Id suggest you continue to use the 512 for the boot drive, and use the 1tb just for games and videos.

This is what I do except my OS drive is 250GB.

Yes but a 500GB MX200 would only cost me about 100€  as a 1TB one would be around 300€ :S

You must be looking at a bad store because larger drives are almost always cheaper per GB.

On Amazon FR it's about 140€. It's actually the MX300 as the MX200 (same as me) doesn't sell anymore (unless on the 250GB version I wrongfully linked, which was at 100€)

Of course price per GB is cheaper on larger drives, but as I already own a 500GB SSD I thought adding a second one in a RAID0 array would be better as it's way cheaper for me instead of a full 1TB.

But you sell the 500GB one, then buy the 1TB one, and it ends up being the same price, and you get 1TB, and you only need to deal with one drive.
