Best custom RX 480?

Hi there, 

 

I am trying to debate between two RX 480's. The ones I have in mind are the 480 8 GB SAPPHIRE+ & the 480 8 GB Gaming X from MSI. 

 

The colors don't matter to me, I'm just looking for performance and reliablility. If you have any other suggestions please let me know!

MSI Gaming X or XFX GTR, whichever is cheaper

The XFX 480 GTR is the best 480. Not the cheapest, though. The Sapphire one is surprisingly not good compared to other 480s, since it has quite a small heat sink. The MSI and ASUS ones are fine, same with the Powercolor one.

@Mr.Meerkat stay away from power color and gigabyte for now. XFX, MSI and ASUS should be good

Since the XFX GTR usually commands a big premium, I tell people to get the second best RX 480 in the MSI Gaming X. You can even save money getting the 4GB version.

if my XFX GTR would'nt crash, it would indeed be quite a beast. so far XFX has been very comprehensive of the situation and even offered to cover my shipping costs to them regarding a possible future RMA. their customer support has been good so far.

 

props to them for that. it could also just be amd's drivers or not at all XFX's fault, so far i am trying to find out the exact cause.

 

Also one of my fans will not work on the other fan's socket, which is very weird, and it have a coil whine too... but i think i got a defective one. but sure go for it, if it was pristine it would be my dream card, just make sure yours work well.

What is good about the XFX in comparison to the MSI Model? Also congrats on Moderator!

The MSI's cooler is a bit better and the XFX PCB is a bit better. For a normal consumer I would choose the MSI because the better PCB on the GTR only matters if you're extreme overclocking.

So is the Asus ROG Strix not recommend? I'm looking into one for a second build and I'm wondering which one to get. Trying to go with a white and black color scheme, so the MSI gaming X would not be a great option.

XFX GTR. Even has white LED fans you can buy from XFX for it.

Personally real happy with my Sapphire Nitro+. Make sure your PSU isn't made out of Chinesium though (have had problems when the card draw exceeded ~130W)

Besides being a bit loud, I think its a pretty good card. Although the cooler isn't the best, if it is significantly cheaper than the XFX GTR I'd go for it.
