SLI Not Worth it ?

MCCOPRA

Hi all,

I was currenlty running a dual sli 1070 setup with my 4k 60fps monitor. I got an opportunity to sell my coolermaster haf xb evo case and getting a corsair 750D in the mean time i am using a spare zalman z3 plus as my case but thx to its size i couldnt fit my 2nd gtx1070 so i have been gaming at 4k with one card for 2 weeks now and suprisingly i am still getting similar frames in all the games i play like owerwatch - world of warcraft - doom - gta v - witcher 3 - dark sould 3 and skyrim the worst difference is 10-15fps but never dropping below 35fps which is still playable.

and also thanks to awesome support from nvidia with sli (have a hb bridge - ribbon - led bridge from msi) last 5-6 drivers are getting worse and worse for sli gaming and windows 10...

so i was planning to sell one of my gtx 1070 while the prices are still good keep one of the cards and wait for amd vega since getting one 1080 gonna still be 5-10frame better and not worth the price and titan x p is too expensive for 4k.

can use some help and oppinions thanks.

I mean you could sell 1 now and wait then sell the other when vega comes out but the second one would probably sell for less. You could always run your monitor at 1440p and get higher fps in games but 4 k 40-60 fps is good. It's up to you cause vega might not be a bunch better than 2 1070s in sli

35-40fps to 50fps is quite a difference in my opinion.

But if you are okay with just one card. Then why not.

SLI was never worth it. The ONLY card I would SLI is the xx80/Ti for the current gen, maybe Titans. Everything else just doesn't make sense besides aesthetics.

10-15FPS on 4K is a pretty big difference though...

It's only worth it if no single card solution is available, but in most cases I would recommend single card and slightly adjust certain video settings. Quality can still be good but a small difference can give you big steps forward in performance on high resos like 4k.

4k is doable these days, but it's still no easy run until 1 but most likely 2 gens ahead.

$300+ for 10-15 frames is like dumping the most expensive fuel in a Honda Civic.

The only cards that I would recommend are the ones where the two cards exceed the single highest for price and performance. The 970 was the perfect example as the cost was about the same (in the States) and the performance was much higher than the 980.

From what I've researched SLI is only worth it if a game optimizes SLI correctly. Most games don't though. I suggest just doing a single card setup unless you really feel the need for 4k graphics.

The fps values i gave are all maxxed all possible settings can easily drop antialiasing a shadows to get more stable 60fps in all games but what i did run like this to get comparison of 2 setups.

its nvidia driver support making me go back to single card setup

used 380 crossfire which was hell thanks to always need to be fullscreen to get cf work

sli was better with 970 setup but after getting 1070 sli its getting worse and worse now since dx12 is not even on the horizon with games no need to have 2 cards for 10fps in max settings. i guess.
