Best WiFi Option for my House

Hi all,

 

long time lurker, first time poster. Appreciate the work you do and hoping you can help.

 

Recently moved in to a brand new 3000 sqft house where I had almost all of the rooms wired for cat6 all culminating at a Gb switch in the entertainment hub thingy in the basement. My current network setup is a Rogers modem/router set in bridge mode leading directly into an D-Link DIR 822 which feeds the switch and is currently my only WAP.

 

Goal: improve wifi throughout the house.

 

I am fairly familiar with all of the technology but what I am having a problem with is deciding what is the best setup for my situation. I assume these are my standard options:

 

1. Buy a beefier router with better wifi range and throughput.

2. Buy a WAP (ubiquiti etc..) and feed that off of one of the rj45 jacks.

3. Buy wifi range extenders.

 

There are obviously pros and cons for each. 1 and 2 can be expensive, but 3 can be unreliable. Any suggestions?

Can you recommend any reliable WAPs cheaper than Ubiquiti?

Buy the most powerful access point and put it in the center of the house on the bottom floor (if your internet speed is required more on the first floor). The best situation is to use as many devices on a Ethernet cable and reserve the wifi only for mobile devices

The UniFi AP AC LR is fairly good, I can get wifi from the other side of the street when I put it at the back of my house, you can also read my review of it (in my signature) for a better idea of if you should get one, as for where I currently have it deployed, it gets quite far too, about 20+ meters from the building. (Through OLD brick walls too)
