The Most Versatile All-in-one Gaming PC but not enough storage?

45 minutes ago, Bleedingyamato said:

Hmmm..  It might be possible to add a SSD then.  But maybe try to find a YouTube video about the computer and see if you can confirm just what upgrade options there are?

Even without any additions that looks like a very nice computer but if upgrading I'd something you defintely want to be able to do then some research is a good idea.

It comes with a 256 GB SSD in a PCI Express 3.0 x4 slot. So this I could upgrade to 1TB. My only concern is that I cannot tell the physical size of this drive and if I could get a 1 TB drive that fits in that space? I love the Killer Double Shot Pro and the Intel RealSense 3D Camera, even if I don't go with this system, whatever I buy or build would need these or better.

I'd say start with YouTube and go from there.  If it has a slot that could fit the SSD you want then that's good but like you mentioned that doesn't guarantee the new SSD will fit.

Anyaay, good luck either with this or building a computer if you go that route.

You can add a hard drive controller, then use an insane case that can handle more drives. I heard you can fit 5 SSDs into a 5.25 inch bay.

Can you really? It seems plausible, just never seen it or even thought about it that way. Hell mine is just duct taped to my face!

I have been debating back and forth over buying a gaming PC or building one for over a year now. I really love the computer in "The Most Versatile All-in-one Gaming PC?" but it does not have enough storage for my Steam library. A 2 TB HDD + 256 GB PCIe SSD would not even be big enough for my Steam folder, even with no OS or other files on either drive. Other Linus videos such as "The Fastest Storage EVER – HOLY $H!T Ep 14" has me thinking about how I could upgrade the storage space on the computer from the first video? Here is the information on the computer from the first video: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/desktops/ideacentre/aio-y900/aio-y910-27/?IPromoID=LEN696673#tab-customize

What are your actual storage requirements?

I would think that even with USB 3.0, an External HDD would be so slow. I have thought about making a separate machine for Steam and Torrent files and networking. I have approximately 2 TB of Steam games, software, etc...; I have another 4 TB of torrent files that also require me to me able to access them quickly.

Here's a 6 TB performance HDD for you! :P

I fail to see the issue here. You're spending that much on a computer, why not just swap out the 2TB drive for a 5TB drive, and then upgrade the SSD to a 1TB? The only issue is whether or not the AIO uses a 2.5" drive or 3.5" drive. You have infinitely more options, and capacities if it has 3.5". Also, it's worth noting that if it only has 2.5"  HDD drive compatibility, you're stuck with 5900rpm. So everything will load noticeably slower. I have a feeling it's a 2.5" drive.

I'd honestly just get an external HDD. They're stupidly cheap.

Have you considered building your own PC? You can build something much better with a slightly different form factor.

Take the FZ01 case for example. 4" tall. Build a small platform over it, and rest your monitor on top.

For the same price as the AIO, you can have 1TB SSD, 6TB HDD, and an overclockable processor.

If you don't need the 4TB available at all times, just throw it in an external hard drive and connect via USB. I do that for my mass storage and I've never had an issue.

It shouldn't be an opinion at all ;) It either is, or it isn't. Numbers don't lie.

I've played Steam games installed on an external portable HDD (so 5400 or 5200 rpm I assume) connected to a USB 2.0 port and it worked just fine.  If anything I think things just might load a bit slower.  But I'm not sure about that.  I have no idea how much data games might need at any given moment vs the limits of USB 2.0 or 3.0.

The drive was a USB 3.0 WD drive but my old laptop I was using only has USB 2.0 and I couldn't get the USB 3.0 card thing to work.

The loading decrease was a result of the 5400rpm drive.

What I'm worried about is how many HDDs I've had wear out. SSDs don't wear out as easily.

HDDs are generally regarded as more reliable, since they have finite writes.

Yes, and form factor does not matter to me, I do not mind having a large full sized tower under my desk.

So, it shortens the 10+ year life of the chip by a couple months? It's really not that bad. Plus the K variant of the CPU comes stock with a 600mhz increase over the locked one. That's already a pretty big performance boost.

And SSD's have finite writes. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

Both SSDs and HDDs have their pros and cons, that's why they also make hybrids that are between the two. I know most games do not benefit from running on an SSD; but I believe some do such as Fallout 4, Skyrim, Witcher 3, etc...

  • 2 weeks later...

In my attempt to make a clone of this system that has the changes I need, I have done the following:

1. I am building a Raspberry Pi media center that has 6TB of backup, can run torrents 24/7, and can easily be connected to remotely.

2. I made this topic to try and find the webcam from this system or something similar:

3. I made this topic to look at it's Network card:

Still, 2Tb+256 flash should be plenty of space for games, apps and everything else you actually need.

Sure, installing, say, Adobe Creative Suite (all of it) will eat up like 200 gigs once you add in plugins and stuff.

=D YAY! You'd get along with my dad using that mentality. His usage of Sony Vegas Pro 13 has left him with no choice but to buy two 4TB HDDs and RAID them for extra storage specifically for Vegas. xD
