It was in the "gaming peripherals" section in my microcenter, right next to the other headsets, and the mice and keyboards were in the next aisle.

No, gaming headsets are not audio devices, they are a peripheral that you put on your head that breaks too much and sounds bad. Which is why anyone who wants one should make a thread in thee peripheral section.

I'm a firm believer in audio headphones over headsets too (proud owner of an ad700x and fiio e10). There's really just no bead to harp so hard on the kid over apples and oranges :/

As a 10-year long guild leader, I have been known to not accept people with table microphones. (If they are bad with a lot of background noise, which they almost always are) Sorry but if you're gaming, use a headset, there are plenty of great headsets and if you think otherwise you're a legitimate idiot. Gaming-oriented ones, sure, usually crappy, but the microphone is usually good enough. (To all the haters)

As for my recommendation; it would be the Siberia.

But I believe if anyone can, they should spend more and get a broadcast-quality headset.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

That's a bad opinion. I use a desktop mic and it sounds better than any gaming headset I've used. Most people who have them have the sensitivity too high and pick up noises they shouldn't. I wouldn't call myself an idiot though, maybe just educated.

Listen here bub, my AKG HSC 171 (broadcast quality) probably sounds better over Teamspeak than anything you're using, I'm simply saying here that not all headsets are bad, it's a misconception brought on by plastic headsets in general, but headsets have existed for a long ass time and the really good ones do not deserve the reputation given by misinformed forumites over here.

we save our dislike for substandard companies like turtle beach corsair and razer making shitty audio products and pushing the market towards gimicky things like "true 7.1" or adding blinking LED's as a form of value add.

we've all welcomed the drop in price of the sennheiser headset and I think we all hope for the beyerdynamic to drop their mmx300 to a more gamer friendly price. but as it stands the gaming headset market is populated with weeds that need to be culled.  I truly do wish that the real audio companies did make more of a presence in this market segment and introduce pc gamers to better audio.

edit: and if you are here to defend razer and turtle beach. well then I am out

For over $200 I would hope it sounds better than my $30 snowflake. In all honesty though most people don't care about the quality of the mic as long as it's somewhat clear and doesn't pick up noise/crackle/pop ect. There are a very few select headsets that are okay, but all they are are normal headphones with a boom mic attached (which you pay a premium for). Headphones + mic will always be better at any price point. Also, I don't know what a "bub" is, but I don't think I am one.

I am not, I am here to defend the concept of headsets. And if a gamer who plays in a clan or guild MUST get a crappy gaming headset to have any hope of not sounding like a trainwreck over Teamspeak, that is an acceptable thing to me. They are crap build quality, muddy or shrilly audio, but at least the microphone gets their voice through loud and clear, without feedback or interference. This makes their existence defensible to me, and no, they are not "weeds to be culled". I would prefer if they were better (which they eventually will be) but getting the mic up to the face of the speaker is a big deal.

I can see what you mean about boom mics, i personally have no use for a desk mic as it isn't practical for me so i need a boom mic. Have you seen or used the Antlion Modmic? Surely that is a good way forward because then you can keep the good positional audio that will come from a decent pair of open backed headphones. I believe generally when people ask for a headset here they are asking for good positional audio for competitive games, generally FPS game so in that case the gaming headsets really don't deliver that well for the price you pay.

I have, unfortunately they haven't been imported to Norway or even Europe (at least last time I checked) so I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet, but I will once the new government raises the minimum value of packages before customs kick in (we've been stuck on a 1972 tariff of 200NOK, or $33)

It is unfortunate, in the UK it's about £15 so we're even worse off. If I could get a Modmic then it could just come with me to any headphone I chose to purchase. As it is I have to settle for the ghetto solution i have at the moment (in my signature). I do think things like the Modmic and the boom pro from V-Moda are good and if a bigger company done this and put a decent bit of marketing it may make a big dent in the market but we'll see.

This thread...

Same story every time...

OP wants a headset.

Regulars post Headphones + Mic.

OP hates reply.

Random chimes in.

Regulars justify audio quality

Randoms suggest headsets

Regulars leave as there is no hope.*

Rinse and repeat, waiting for next "headset thread"

a single cable just like headsets including a volume toggle and mic off switch just like a headset... I guess that's silly too.

oh well " I pity the fool " who amasses a pile of broken and dead gaming audio devices like I have done.
