Easy method(s)/tips to indicate possible bottlenecks..?

Hi guys, so um.. my friend for some odd reason is deciding to give his old PC to me in particular instead of selling it because he doesn't like selling PC-Hardware and so, I'm typically speaking getting an old(?) PC for free :D

The reason I'm making this thread though is because I wanted to ask you guys if the CPU will be ok for a GTX 1080 or 1070 as the GPU does need a upgrade desperately. I'm not sure if it would bottleneck during gaming but, here's why I wanted to ask you guys! The CPU is a i5-2500k on an Asus P8P67 3.0 USB Motherboard.

If you guys think it could handle any of the two GPUs (GTX 1080 or GTX 1070), which one?

And also, I hate to sound harsh but could someone perhaps list all if not, most of the possible CPUs that would not bottleneck a GTX 1080 or 1070, preferably older CPUs that you can get in some second hand PCs, e.g.. i3/i5/i7/Xeon's on eBay etc...... would help me out a lot if I had a nice long list of CPUs just so I know which one would and would not bottleneck during Gaming and/or Editing etc..

Thanks!

No, 2600k for example is just as good as 2500k for gaming, as games tend not to use those threads.
i suggest you get a new platform, also hit an i5, if your budget dosent allow it now, just overclock your 2500k as far as possible, and then save month or two and get like 5500k or something.

Well that depends on the game. Some games can acctually utilize all 8 threads from i7 CPUs.

I see :| Any other 1155 CPUs that will handle a 1080/1070..?

Could possibly change the CPU, maybe.

The best 1155 CPU would be i7 2600k, but it's not worth the upgrade probbably.

It also depends on what games are you playing. For overwatch game, your CPU wouldn't be bottlenecking by GTX 1070.

Also at what resolution and fps do you want to game? Do you have 1080p 60Hz monitor?

No other CPU what so ever? Are you sure..?

Not even a 1155 i7 CPU ..? o.O

I'm sure those would be dirt cheap now. i think iv seen ex-lease systems with those for NZD$100

To identify a bottleneck you have to have a benchmark results for identical system/components to comlare with.

So do the research and use different trustworthy sources.

Connection200mbps / 12mbps 5Ghz wifi

In reply about the res/fps, 1080p Ultra at least if not Med/High-1440p.

In reply about the monitor, I do indeed and will probably use HDMI into the monitor.

i would shove a RX480, GTX 1050 or 1060 (3GB) in there and play some 1080p games

Well, the rig atm has a quite old 650 TI but would prefer a 1070 if it doesn't bottleneck that is.

A 1060 I suppose would probably do it but I dunno, was hoping for 1070 as mentioned :/

Yeah that's the problem, I can't really understand how to identify it, that's why I would prefer a list of CPUs.

I've tried some sources but they all vary too much.

if you have a 1080p monitor at 60Hz you dont need a 1070 atm. where i am the 1070 is twice the price of a 3GB 1060 so id rather save the change  for a later upgrade

Well if he can get i7 2600k CPU for around 100$, then it's worth the upgrade in my opinion. Plus he can also sell that i5 2500k and get some money back, so investment wouldn't be that huge.

Well GTX 1060 can handle 1080p at ultra settings with 60fps.

GTX 1070 is for 1440p ultra settings 60fps.

But you could play at 1440p reolustion at 60fps with GTX 1060, but you need to lower down some settings. Usually you just need to turn them down from ultra to high.

If you do have money for GTX 1070, I would say go for it, and if you notice that your CPU is bottlenecking you, just upgrade it to either i7 2600k, ort go with new motherboard + CPU later when you get more money for upgrade.

But I'm pretty sure i7 2600k + GTX 1070 will be good for gaming at 1440p. You can also OC that CPU a bit if you need to.

U can go on futuremark website and check firestrike results. Their database has tons of test results on it. Id be damned if there wasnt a single i5-2500k (maybe not stock but some OCed for sure) with GTX 1070 or 1080.

U can also look at how latest i5 copes woth 1070 or 1080 and if there are noticable bottlenecks then u know your i5 will do worse.

As people said 1060 is the safest bet.

The best 1155 CPU is the i7 3770k (aside from the extreme processors that is). I have a 4770 (which really isn't that far away from a 3770k) and a 1080. I haven't really tested bottlenecking since I only had two games, Shadows of Mordor (which automatically caps my frame at either 100 or 110 I forgot) and Far Cry Primal. I'll try testing it out now.

Well it can do 1080p/1440p at 60Hz so.. ya

I should have reworded my original comment, my apologies :P

Like I said before ... depends on the game.

i5 2500k + GTX 1070 test: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=i5+2500k+GTX+1070

i7 2600k + GTX 1070 test: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=i7+2600k+GTX+1070

Check at few videos and you will get all your informations.

In general I would say i7 2600k and GTX 1070 is good combination.

Highest: (Actually got it around 95 FPS but wasn't fast enough to screen)

Lowest: (Lowest is around 63 FPS but wasn't fast enough to screen)

Average is at around 75-81

@XIPure I just listened to Kyle and Pauls' latest livestream and they mentioned i5 sandy bridge in their talk !

If u want to hear their opinion here u go (Talk about the article linked below start at 20:30):

This is article (came out few days ago) actually shows i5 performance at 1080p compared to optimal performance with i7-6700k so have a loot and decide for yourself.
