Hi all I had found an old computer which has an AMD cpu in around 2009 ish I think. I was wondering to try and fix it up to either give it to my sister or my mum. It has an  Athlon II X2 215 in it and I was wondering does anyone know any other CPU's I can use in that same CPU socket. I know more about intel side than AMD.

I also heard from around the internet that they disabled some of the cores on them certain CPU's so would that mean I could enable them somehow. Thanks

That CPU uses socket AM3 I believe. You can use any AM3+ socket mobo for this as well as they are compatible in most cases. check the specs before buying though, just to be sure

Edit: FM2 I just brainfarted...

It's an FM2 any Athlon that's out at this moment in time should work in it. Don't know anything about the disabled core thing though. Weird.

You can enable the cores. At the factory they made one die with 8 cores I believe, and when testing them, they disabled any faulty cores and sold them as a lower model. You can enable them again on some boards that support it, however it may not work. I tried this on my brothers machine and it was Core 0 that was faulty, and it just happened to be the one core the board wouldn't allow to be disabled manually.
