Revitalising an old Logitech G5

juretrn

I have a pretty old and worn out Logitech G5 and i have been recently thinking about getting a new mouse, but I changed my mind  after seeing some nifty tutorials on the web about repairing and modding mice.

I decided to fix my worn out cable and fix the plastic that comes on top of the mouse by adding some decals with a carbon fiber texture.  I was inspired to do these things by these tutorials:

http://ezrascottslife.blogspot.com/2012/12/why-most-braided-cables-are-bad-idea.html

http://themodzoo.com/forum/index.php?/topic/280-diy-mod-guide-di-noc-carbon-fiber-gaming-mouse/

This is the initial situation:

The cable is pretty badly damaged:

Opening it up, eww:

Soldering the cable:

This is all I managed to do today. For some inexplicable reason, I could not find any electrical tape in my house . I am still waiting for my carbon fiber decals, will update when those come.

Mine is still in pretty good nick. I found it had started jumping a little and was unable to track in a straight line, turned out that all I needed was to wet a Q-Tip and clean the optics :P Pretty interested in getting some of those friction pads though... Nice work!

Fortunately, the tracking on mine still works like a charm.

Also, it feels good to give a trusty piece of equipment a few years of life to it.

Finally did the cable, thankfully nothing blew up, so that's something:

Also, scratched off the dark coating that comes on the dpi indicator as it was coming off by itself.

Unfortunately, the carbon fiber decal has not arrived yet. Hopefully, it does on monday .

Where? on the little cables?

No, I didn't have heatshrink that was small enough.

But i did use it on the overall cable.

Finally finished! The decal only got delivered to me today. It feels really nice, as it has a great texture. And it looks badass.

Pretty nifty. Can you feel the carbon fiber when you move your finger from the outer shroud to the clicker? I'd be afraid it would peel up a bit or I would feel it and then pick at it, because of habits.

As you have to heat it up (I actually used a hair dryer :) ) and stretch it at the edges, there is almost nothing to peel on the edges, as the layer is so thin. But you can feel the materials texture pretty clearly.

Actually, a new mouse was being considered (the g500s) , but then I thought why not save some money and learn something new while doing it.
