Actually, it can't, thanks to the gross lack of quality assurance. If you want a secure OS, stick with Windows 10 or switch to a real Unix.

Linux distributions regularly make the hitlists of serious security holes - granted, some of which are fixed after years.

Yet, almost the whole internet is hosted on Linux.

Then yes. I am surprised it is as secure as it seems to be. I think major companies have their own server OS.

Is that classic start? How much better is it? I don't want to waste the 40gb my laptop has on its boot drive.

It's Classic Shell, but my windows 10 was fully edited to feel like windows 7, restored the windows photo viewer back, got rid of "apps" since this isn't a phone lmao, installed Media Player Classic, deleted photos, groove music, xbox dvr, all that crap, and many more tweaking: I went through a long process to get back to the former PC base established with WinXP and Win7 before this need to make everything a smartphone, and now that it is complete this is by far the best desktop experience I ever had, Win10 can be the greatest OS it just requires you to run after the ways to make it do what you want it to do.

i gave that alot of thought actually. while do not trust windows enough, it is essential for me to use certain applications that only run on windows. virtual machine wouldn't be a viable choice since there may be some compatibility/driver issues, so dualbooting is the only way to go for me at the moment. i can just pull the ethernet cable out when im on windows :q

The best option for you is probably dual booting both win 10 ltsb (which has a lot of the awful features ripped out) along with the latest version of ubuntu

  • 2 weeks later...

Casting a vote for Linux. I left Windows environment in 2015 as W10 launch was approaching. I have Win7HP on a separate SSD and can boot between the two, but in practice when I need Windows, I just launch a VM from my Linux host. I settled on Kubuntu after trying many different distros: Fedora, Ubuntu (flavors), Linux Mint (flavors). Best to experiment using Live USB. Good luck.

I think you'd be very satisfied with a well-prepped dist of Linux if you're willing to try it out. It's free, so why not right?

For beginners there are many alternatives but probably the most common ones are Mint Cinnamon, or Ubuntu.

I personally prefer OpenSuse. Gotta love Yast and the manageability and lightweight of the system is appreciated.

Mint comes pre-packed with lots of hardware support for different machines natively, so you will likely miss out on all the hours of fun digging for repo's with unsigned drivers for your Broadcom... =)

Plus, it comes with OVPN installed as well, making importing openVPN profiles that are pre-configured a breeze.

I'd say give it a shot and see what you think of it.

hi there,

may i know your opinion on what are the main pros and cons for you between W10 compared to W8.1 (which i am currently on) and/or Linux? i am rather paranoid about W10 harvesting data (i heard about the settings that doesnt do anything despite being toggled off, etc)

also, may i know if W10 has a more cluttered environment (Cortana, non needed stuff) compared to W8.1? and is it a wise choice (for someone who has roughly 3~ months of experience in Linux)(also, i use CAD software and torrent quite frequently, but i don't play any games) to use Linux instead of the other two? most of my main concern about the operating systems are privacy, customizability and also less clutter (i got a rather bad OCD)

i really appreciate inputs from you guys, and thanks for taking the time to read this <3

It really depends on what you keep in your PC.
Personally, I've got bunch of private photos (not dirty ones :) ), music, movies......things that anybody can get anywhere.

Things like "cybercrime" are like......nonsense.
My friend, you are not FBI or CIA....
You and me are not interesting "stuff" to hackers.

So if MS wants to see my location....fine.
If they want to see what I'm downloading.....FINE.
Downloading torrent files isn't exactly illegal in my country since they don't give a damn about private stuff on my PC.

Just relax and use Windows 10.
Anyway if you are scared, you can use Linux distro...
I don't like them.....but hey, that is just me.

Don't use Windows 8.

My dear friend, who gives a "F" about you and me and our PCs?

I heard that coffee's good for my sex life.

It isn't.

It kept me awake through the whole damn thing!

I actually had to participate.

Windows 8.1 still has the same security back doors as Windows 10 and from a personal standpoint I would highly recommend to not use Windows unless you NEED software that is non-compatible with Linux. Linux is cheaper, more secure, more stable, more customizable, et cetera.
