upgrade to x99 or z270

Current rig is finally on its way out the door. Another fan header died and the f_usb3.0 header died (down to almost nothing). Time for me to actually build the rig i've been contemplating and discussing on the forums for some time. The small form factor pc I initially wanted to build is it out since I assume an i7 + 1080 will cause massive heat issues (wanted to build in a node 202, if a build like this is actually doable without thermal throttling, let me know).

-Budget is $1800

-Dont need a lot of storage (thinking of a 500gb 960evo as boot). My 2TB drive from my old rig will be moved into the new rig since it houses my steam games. The rest is stored on a local NAS

-Don't know if I should replace my 980ti with a 1080 and throw the 980ti in my wifes rig

-60% gaming 40% video and rendering work, at least based on my recent usage

Best course of action?

If you are going to priotize gaming over the video and rendering work I personaly would go with the 7700k on a z270, it will still provide great performance for such work application while being a king in gaming.

The Node 202 at best supports coolers that are 95W TDP. And you might hate yourself for installing one of those because they make it really hard to work on the computer. The LGA 2011v3 processors are out because they're at least 140W TDP. And even though you could use an i7-6700K or i7-7700K since they're both 91W TDP, you can't overclock them because even the slightest overclock will go over the TDP limit. If you opt for a larger mini-ITX case like a Corsair 250D, your options expand a lot more.

I would say with that budget though, go with an X99 platform and stuff it in a MicroATX case. Or you know, everyone's favorite "wait for Ryzen" response.

On an aside, I use an i7-6700, the not K processor. It sits at 65W TDP and I paired it with a 90W TDP cooler. It'll comfortably hit 4GHz turbo, but it thermal throttles aggressively. If it even touches 60C, it stops turbo boosting.

I may just forget about the SFF and mITX rig entirely since its not an entirely logical rig to build, at least with my use case. What would be good build for x99?

I wont wait on ryzen for 2 reasons :

 - Not holding my breath on AMD being competitive at the high end

 - I cant afford for this current rig's mobo to crap out entirely before I get the new rig.

980 ti to 1080 isn't worth the upgrade. I'd wait for 1080 ti to come out, or wait for vega to release benchmarks

Wife's rig is running off of the iGPU which is why i'm considering upgrading and give the 980ti to her.

Perhaps his wife deserves a 980ti :/

A 1080 will still show some performance gain regardless, though waiting for vega is good, it will drop nvidia prices a little and might even be a good deal itself

*edit: for what is worth, my boyfriend giving me my GPU made my entire year.

Something with the i7-6800K. It's "moderately" more expensive than the i7-6700K (anywhere from $40-$80 depending on who you're comparing), is 6C/12T, and you could just overclock it yourself to the next step, saving $200 in the process.

I'm playing on a 1440p ultrawide so the improvements may be larger than I think. And she plays games sporadically, but it pisses her off when things start to act funny with the iGPU.

Local shop has the 6800k for $30 more than the 7700k. Probably going to give it a go and see what happens
