They're both good options. I'd go with whichever you see yourself utilizing more. @Sakkura can tell you all about the Rift.

I was looking for a headset to play Elite: Dangerous with. Since it doesn't require the VR controllers, the Vive wouldn't be necessary (although I understand that it is the best VR headset for overall VR gaming). I've heard the Oculus Rift would be a good option?

I have a Vive I love it. I have not tried the Rift but i have heard that it is more comfortable as it is lighter. If you are going to be using VR only sitting down i would say go for the rift because you won't have to buy controllers and it will be cheaper. But i feel that you need hand controllers if you are going to get the full experience of VR. You can also add the controller to the Rift at a later date but you end up paying more because you need 3 Rift sensors to reliably track for room scale VR.

Check out Frontier's own forums. I have a Vive, and when I tried it, there were some problems with it and ED that Rift didn't suffer. I'm not up to speed on if that has been resolved now as I'm mostly inactive in ED. The Rift was considered better for that game. Also with the new touch controllers the Rift should catch up quickly with Vive on room scale.

The thing is I was really only going for VR in Elite: Dangerous in which I would use a throttle and joystick with, so no controller needed. I don't even think vr controllers are an option in the game. I wasn't really gonna play any other types of VR games that would require controllers, so the Oculus should be fine.

Exactly my point if all you are going to do it Elite Dangerous go for the Rift. But if you wanted to try room scale VR too then the Vive would be the better choice.

Ya I've heard things similar to this. Elite is more centered for the Rift I think.

If you are only interested in seated games go Rift

If you are interested in room scale go rift and touch or vive.

Why get such expensive tech for one game :P I have a Vive and think there's a lot more games and tracking is better but if you're only planning on sitting games and one games none of this matters anyway.

facebook is knows to have very awesome business practice like tracking your data and having unnecessary software. looking at the vr space most people are going vive than the rift so the development will be interesting. current state of vr is in its infancy but vive is doing a bit better than rift i have used both.

Every company under the sun is looking for telemetry. If you're on the internet, you're being tracked. It isn't a bad thing since they need marketing data to find what products people are looking for and they likely don't care who you are.

Eh sorta a meh point, the real reason why I wouldn't go with facebook is there business practices of exclusivity while Vive has a much more open source type of feel for there technology at CES they unveiled a lot of new Vive addons after HTC allowed other 3rd parties to make addons with there lighthouse technology (also all those Vive Wireless kits at CES were awesome).
