Thin and light quad core thunderbolt 3 laptop

Hello everyone,

Am I the only one who thinks the ideal setup would be a quad core, thin and light laptop to carry around, preferably without an internal gpu to accomodate a larger battery and lower the price tag; paired with an external gpu dock via thunderbolt 3?

Apparently I am because I don't think any manufacturer has released such a laptop, or is there some mythical beast I don't know about?

I know there are laptops like the Razer Blade Stealth and the XPS 13 but they all have dual cores with hyperthreading.

And with more games taking advantage of 4 processing cores I think these won't last very long.

Then you could say why not buy the normal Razer Blade or an XPS 15, well they have internal gpu's and I'd rather trade an internal gpu for a lower price tag and longer battery life.

So have you guys seen a thin and light, portable, 1080p (again to keep cost down, save battery life and i think 4k doesn't make sense on a laptop screen), thunderbolt3, afordable laptop, post the link below!

Thanks a lot and enjoy your day!

Laptops: Acer VN7-592G (I5-6300HQ, 960m), Lenovo P43s

Phones: LG V30, Samsung S10

Speakers: 2 ALR Jordan 3M's (120W each)

Amplifier: SMSL SA-98E

Headphones: Sony WH-1000XM3, Sennheiser Momentum

That's the point. 3 years later they're in the hole again for x amount of money.

MSI GS30 Shadow, but they're getting rarer. $1700 is obscene for a laptop without a GPU, but the dock does come with it.

It has a quad-core Haswell CPU that can keep up with the i5 desktop parts and maybe even an i7 part if it's an older one. It has a proprietary GPU docking port though..

idk

Now i don't know where you're from, and i don't know if norwegians have access to the best deals, but in Norway, the cheapest option here it is the Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-GC004T, which already comes with a 1060. Seems like there are not many really good options for your criteria :I

Right, I forgot about that one. But like you say $1700 for a laptop without gpu is insane, that's like Macbook Pro territory and we don't want to go there do we? ;)

Well someone has one used for 1.1k, but it's still expensive. I have a HP 2570p, and it's a 12.5" laptop with support for quadcore CPUs and external GPU enclosures.

It was $250 refurbished, and mine came with one small bump on the top cover. GPU dock was $50, and my 770 was meant to go into it but it died the day it left my PC. imo it's one of the best value little pocket rockets there is, and it smashes the MBP 13.

idk

Indeed there aren't. And Linus said it himself on a recent WANshow, he also thinks a thin and light paired with a gpu dock is the future of gaming, so it does make sense to at least try and manufacture one at a reasonable price.

Btw i'm from Belgium, to give you an idea 1080's cost at least 740 euro here, the cheapest 1060 laptops are around 1600 euro, crazy pricing compared to the US... :(

Via expresscard? Lower bandwith then thunderbolt 3 ofcourse but as a secondary machine i guess it would be a start.

Yeah, ExpressCard. It manages to negotiate a x1 2.0 link, and it doesn't bottleneck it that much..

I'm using it so when I go to my dad's place I don't have to use a first gen i7 and a 650ti.. and hey, who's gonna steal a shell with a GPU and a PSU...

idk

Hahaha, pricing in Europe is a mess... It would almost make you think about going on vacation to the states and bringing a few things with you.

Would be like 30 EUR cheaper to travel to the US, buy the stuff and return home to build my computer, but then you'd have to buy food and such and you know eeeh

just keep in mind on the HP machines you can only use up to 700 series cards as AMD and anything newer requires more RAM at boot. you can circumvent this by having a program load the OS with a different memory structure, but it's really annoying.

Lucky! In AU, we have a really bad second-hand hardware market. 770s for like $190, I've seen a dual 760 ASUS mars card for $240, Titan went for a brutal $460.. an original GTX titan. On par with the 970. fml.. 780s are going for $230 + shipping, and 780ti is $300.

Buy the Dell XPS 15 without a gpu, yes this is possible, around 1200€, but wait for reviewers to check if the new one has a Thunderbolt connection with full speed. The old one doesn't.
