Quick tracert ping question

Phil9943

When you do a tracert command in cmd, why are there three columns per hop in the results? Are these 3 numbers the time it takes to send 3 different packages?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are multiple packets being sent. The first column shows the fastest latency, followed by the slowest, and then of course the average.

On second thought, I think it is three different packets being sent, and the round time it takes for them to return (even if they take different routes).

Traceroute sends out three packets per TTL increment. Each column corresponds to the time is took to get one packet back (round-trip-time), you can average them if you like.

Still sort of on topic, if you use WinMTR or the Linux equivalent to gather more information regarding your trace routes.  Really good for monitoring a route over a specific time, allows for straight copy to clipboard, export to text/html etc.  Very helpful in certain scenarios, thought it may be helpful for you if you are trying to diagnose a particular issue.
