For their new z270 ROG boards (IX Hero, IX Code, and IX Formula) Asus list the same USB2.0/ROG_EXT header specs which read 1xUSB 2.0 header along with 1xROG_EXT header (which doubles as a USB2.0 header).

So basically, all boards should have 2 USB2.0 headers with the ROG_EXT included right? WRONG!

For some stupid reason, they decided to merge the ROG_EXT and USB2.0 header on the IX Hero board into one: http://m.imgur.com/nPKtKYz

This means that the IX Hero only has one USB2.0 header.

On the Code and Formula, they each have an ROG_EXT along with a separate USB2.0 header.

Code: http://m.imgur.com/Weo6cLZ

Formula: http://m.imgur.com/kDvAmQ4

Seriously, how fking sketchy can you guys be? I wouldn't be so angry if they would have just noted this in the specs, but no, they decided to just write the same specs down for their USB2.0 and ROG_EXT headers for all 3 boards. Fking ridiculous!

Well the Hero is the "budget" ROG board.

There will be compromises.

Idk I just feel pissed because they should have at least said something in their specs. Now I have to basically get an internal USB hub and suffer the performance drops.

It doesn't have the ROG_EXT connector though. That's why it gets another header.

Well I can't because I need ROG to match my strix 1080. The next step up is the Code but the ROG logo doesn't even light up on that board. The IX Formula is like a shit load of money so that's out of the question too.

Depends on what you want. If you're not going to overclock much the 150 dollar range is where it's at. Much better value. But if you want every last MHz. You saw the link.

It's the user's decision to pay $200 more for 200 more MHz, but I rank Z170 motherboards like so:

- Budget: 80-100

- Mainstream: 100-150

- Premium: 150-250

- Don't get it: Anything over 250

Well I actually need to connect my 2 front USB2.0 ports and my Corsair Link cable for my H115i, so I would need 3 USB2.0 headers.

I went ahead and bought the NZXT Internal USB Hub: https://www.nzxt.com/products/internal-usb-hub

But the only thing that's worrying me is the possibility of performance drops, instability, etc. for the things that are plugged into it, but maybe I'm just being paranoid...

Save yourself the bother and ditch Link. Boom, free'd a header.

Use any of the motherboards 9 million fan headers.

I don't want to ditch Link. I like being able to change the LED's on my pump and also being able to set fan curves and change pump modes.

The only thing I'm worried about is potential instability with Link since it will be connected to the USB hub, but I don't know how likely that would be.

You're missing the point. I don't think the added features and VRM are worth $200 or whatever premium it commands, but that's me personally and that will of course be reflected in my recommendations, I am not unbiased.

F for the most part I think our culture of overspending (even though that's a subjective matter, you can draw the line somewhere) is pretty dangerous. We're not on unlimited resources on Earth and for the most part, more expensive correlates to taking more from the environment. So I'll continue to give people the option that's 90% of the one that costs twice as much.

Edit: I think the sushi example is pretty good on this one. Fishing techniques employed by today's fishing industry leave millions of tons of waste in the form of fish they send back, abandoned fishing nets and lines, etc. Sushi's great, but it's not worth that.

Nah I don't care about the USB2.0 at all lol. I just want them to be useable at least cause I got 2 USB3.0 ports on my front panel too.

I'm just worried about there being problems with Corsair Link since it'll be connected to the internal USB hub. But I'm probably being dumb and just overthinking everything...

Just how much data does Corsair Link require? It's only outputting metrics about your computer, I bet you can pull that off on 5MB/s
