question about case fan connectors

I am planning to have a pc  build with the nzxt s340 special edition and a MSI Z170 A PRO as motherboard, the case has 2 pre-installed fans on the back and top but I want to place 2 additional fans in front but there are 3X 3pin fan connectors an 2X 4 pin cpu fan connectors.

is it possible to connect the 4th one using the 4 pin connector, and will the only change be the way the fans are monitored and not being able to add a second cpu fan on the cpu cooler?

You know if you run out of motherboard fan connectors you can always just plug them through molex on your PSU, the only down side is that you can't monitore their rpm and they are likely to run full speed all the time, about the 3pin to the 4pin the only difference is that your motherboard will be able to speed it up or speed it down given the general temps raising up or lowering due to different workloads, useful if you want a quiet case when its idling... now the good and old sound of spinning case fans are always nostalgic to me, I just make them run on full speed all the time =D

There are splitters. Each mobo fan header can power 2-4 fans, depending bit on fan. It depends on mobo which headers can be controlled and how much. PWM header (if they have true PWM) are always best. MSI is also better about fan controls, but by default 3pins are locked at 60% min speed. You can go lower with Speedfan (to 30-40% depending on fans).

What fans are you planning to use and what are you referring to with 'the 4th one'?

I was planning to use 2 nzxt fn v2 120mm fans in the front of the case, they don't sell the black one's anymore in my country but that isn't a problem because they aren't going to be visible in the front of the case.

my motherboard has 3x 3 pin fan headers but I want to connect 4 fans, meaning that the 4th one needs to be connected via a fan plitter

Yes, a fan splitter off of your motherboard would work just fine.
