Router VM?

Hello everyone,

 

I have a rack server running Windows Server 2012 R2.

It has two ethernet ports.

My router has a firmware bug that TimeWarner won't update to fix, and the bug crashes the router when I try to go to the port forwarding page. The SSH and Telnet ports on the router are closed and I can't figure out how to open them.

I've looked it up and it seems I could do, with a second router, a thing called "cascading routers" to have two separate networks on the same modem from two different routers.

 

The question comes now:

Is there a way to make something like pfSense a VM on my server and connect to it? Or at least get my server acting separate from my router so I can get port forwarding on it?

(I realize while writing this I'd need 3 ethernet ports, but I have two wifi usb receiver's too.)

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

Knowing how to network (subnet/vlan) will come in handy. 

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?

depends on how your network is setup...

What about getting rid of the TWC box and getting a dedicated modem and router that you own? Not sure if that's an option or not but figured I'd throw it out there.

I have an Archer CR700. Can't get rid of it for complicated reasons, stuck with the TWC 2in1 acting as modem and the Archer as router.
