I found a really good deal on a server computer for 10$. The owner says he has had it for years, but isnt sure what processor it has but he says it is probably intel. He says it is missing an hdd. It has "a true dual processor, redundant power supplies and 4gb of ECC memory. What do you guys think? Could it be better for gaming than my current pc? (specs in description) thanks!

If you get a running PC for $10, you've made a good deal. 4GB of ECC RAM alone is worth more than $10.

That said, no, it's not a good PC for gaming. Still, buy it, strip it, sell the parts, put that towards your actual gaming build. I'd jump at any working $10 PC. You're not going to convince me that there's a working PC in the world worth less than $10.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Hi again :) Haha. Would it at least be better than my pc? Or close to it? It has two processors! That sounds like it would be great for arma!

sounds like pentium D and core2duo era marketing. ~10 years old. Servers this old did not always have PCIe. Unlikely to have PCIe 2 and might even have AGP

No, not in any way. The two dual-core processors are probably hot, inefficient beasts, and they probably don't have hyperthreading. That would mean that you're running two processors that, combined, have less power than your current one. Not only have you downgraded your PC in this scenario, but you're doubling (or more) your PC's power usage in the process.

Seriously, buy it and flip it. If you'd feel bad about flipping it right away, use it as a file server for a couple of months before parting ways with it. A $10 working PC is never a bad find, just don't plan on playing games with it.

A file server is more or less a dumping ground for all your files. Lots of techies keep a PC connected to their home network that does nothing but back up critical files from their other network-connected PCs on a periodic basis. What's become even more common is for someone to have a single computer in one room that houses all the media files (movies, music, etc.) for the entire house, and when someone wants to watch one in a different room, they stream it from that PC. Keeps you from having to have the same file in four or five different places.

That's the best use I can see for that server, depending upon how solid its internet is. It's not going to be very useful for you in any other role, as I doubt it can even handle YouTube, but as a server or a flip, sure.

That's some ancient RAM right there. That system would date, imo, to around 2006. Maybe earlier. You're definitely not gaming on it lol.

Would the motherboard be good for something like dual xeons? Ive been researching xeons a lot and they seem to be amazing price to performance because of all the 15 buck ones on ebay. They need a 1156 mobo tho so maybe this is the perfect candidate for that?

No, this board far, far predates LGA1156. It far predates LGA771, best I can tell. If you can get the system to boot, you can check and see what type of Xeons you have in there. If they're being advertised as "true dual-core", my guess is that they're not hyperthreaded. Combined, you have four threads. Know what else has four threads and is probably faster than those Xeons? Any desktop i3 ever made lol

I'd part it out and try and sell the bits and pieces off. The PSU, RAM and CPUs might have some eBay resale value. The motherboard quite possibly would, and the rack itself could be worth a few bucks to someone if you want to go through the trouble. You've got a little homework to do on exactly what you have there, but there's no doubt in my mind it's worth more than the $10 you paid for it.

I didnt buy it yet. Its on craigslist and a bit far. I might call him though and ask more information. I dont think ill get it though now that i know it probably isnt of any use. It says true dual processor no core so it could have decent ones im not sure.
