Why is the 980 the better performer?!?!?!?

KamilKrait15

Reasons to consider the
AMD Radeon R9 390

blue-report-icon.pngReport a correction

Better floating-point performance 5,120 GFLOPS vs 4,358 GFLOPS More than 15% better floating-point performance
Higher texture rate 160 GTexel/s vs 136.2 GTexel/s More than 15% higher texture rate
More shading units 2,560 vs 2,048 512 more shading units
More texture mapping units 160 vs 128 32 more texture mapping units
Wider memory bus 512 bit vs 256 bit 2x wider memory bus

So i had a look at the specs of both the r9 390 (which is what i have) and the 980 and really the 390 should be smashing the 980 in gaming... however it does not, in fact the 980 beats the 390 in almost any game. This has been on my mind for a very long time and is bothering me. Why the f*ck is this happening? Answers GREATLY appreciated

Never use a site that judges performance based solely off hardware numbers. They're rarely correct unless you're comparing the exact same architecture. Look up benchmarks instead. You know, numbers that matter.

Don't know, but I love my R9 390 from XFX, it kills 1080p gaming on ultra with over 60 FPS, and has 8GB of GDDR5 which is why I chose it over the 970 which only has 3.5GB, and beats it in benchmarks don by Zaystwocents, as for the price now it can be pick up for $150 to $180.

you need to relook at the game performance of the two GPUs

the 390 beats the crap out of the GTX980 in most games.

and note here the 390 fully supports DX12

the 980 barely supports it and in DX12 titles it gets it ass whooped by the 390 everywhere

I still haven't got a clear answer as to why the r9 390 is beaten regardless of its superior specs...

Because specs dont mean everything. The 390 is in a different bracket from the 980. Its the top of its bracket but cant beat the next highest bracket

Because GPUBoss. Also, Nvidia uses an architecture that requires less shaders and higher clocks. AMD has a different architecture that uses more shaders and lower clocks. You cannot compare with hardware specs over different architectures.
