A few seconds before they get too hot. Don't bother taking the risk, but you can just hold any heatsink to it with some thermal paste just to check.

So I can probably just hold a stock intel heatsink to it and it will be find for a couple seconds?

I wouldn't risk it either. I know my old 8400 GS goes for quite some time with no fan, but thats still making it run at 70-ish degrees. And thats because it has a full heatsink on it, not just a waterblock.

If it has the block on it, it should be ok for a second or two.

A few minutes. But I wouldn't do it repeatedly (I've done it with my 290)

Jayztwocents did a video featuring that, you can go like 5 minutes with a block only.

You can keep a GPU without cooling for a few minutes but I wouldn't do any sort of benchmarking without sufficient cooling.

If the block is on it you can post and go into windows with no issues. I'd do it, done it plenty of times on all my blocks.

Also remember that quite a lot of GPUs these days spend a lot of their time running with the fans turned off and only kick on when the GPU temp goes over xyz celcius. As long as you have the block attached you would be fine to run the GPU for 2D tasks for short periods.
