You wanna overclock that there K-series CPU? Buy a Z series board.

You don't wanna overclock? Pick the cheapest or most recommended H or B series board.

What if he doesnt want to overclock but wants an m.2 drive? Then he'd need a H170/Q170.

Basing needs simply off overclocking won't help lol.

No but both Newegg and pc part pocket both allow you to filter by feature. Unless your overclocking no reason to worry about your chipset. Just get the board with the features you want.

How do chipsets matter a lot ?

Is it necessary to look after this when future proofing a pc?

It depends on your use case. It is not necessary for "future proofing" but for features like more SATA ports, etc.

Some B150 chipset motherboards have M.2 slots too, like the ASUS B150M-A/M.2. :)

Higher end chipsets have features lower end chipsets don't have. Whether you want those features or not, depends on how long you're going have that computer, before it's time for a upgrade. Most will go with the high end for the sake of having everything, rather than having one with limited features and regretting it later on. Now some will say, but high end chipset cost more.

Asus skylake boards from pcpp filter by

  • SLI and CFX capable
  • 4 ram slots
  • DDR4
  • 1x M.2
  • Lowest price

Asus B150-Plus $93

Asus H170-Pro/CSM $97

Asus Z170-E $125

Both B150 and H170 cannot oc. Can run cfx at x16/x4, ram is locked to ddr4 2133, and that about it. B150 has 8 lanes, h170 has 16.

Z170, supports oc, sli and cfx at x8/x8, ddr4 2133 and above, the chipset itself has 20 pcie lanes.
