Are Seagate Barracuda HDDs any good?

Hello!

Basically what the title says... Are the Seagate Barracuda HDDs any good? I read some reviews and people said that they broke after 3 years. I had a 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD in my old PC what I got in 2008 or 2009 and the HDD still works! What's the case now tough? I'm planning to buy a 3TB HDD and WD HDDs are notably more expensive than Seagates.

Thank you! :)

Yes.

Of course they break. Eventually. Like everything.

Reason you hear about them breaking more often than not is cause lots of people use them.

you can judge quality by the warranty period. That reflects the confidence the manufacturer places on their product. Some WD cost more because they give longer warranties, the blue drives however are very cheap.

@Litargirio But do they break that fast? My hdd old Seagate HDD what I told about still works and it's almost 8 years old. It would be nice to see a HDD atleast work for 5 years... 3 years is quite short time.

People who have issues tend to leave negative feedback whereas those who had a good experience stay quiet. Barracudas are fine.

That entirely depends on which drive you are planning on buying. Overall, Seagate drives are more reliable than Western Digital drives, but all HDD manufacturers has some unreliable drives.

Stats from hardware.fr (uses the return rates from a large french retailer as their source):

Italics = They only sold 100-200 drives, so the sample size is deemed small and not as accurate as for the rest

Spoiler
  • HGST 0,60% (contre 0,81%)
  • Seagate 0,69% (contre 0,60%)
  • Western 1,00% (contre 0,90%)
  • Toshiba 1,15% (contre 0,96%)

It is best not to think which one is least likely to break, but to assume it will break and have a plan in place before it does so. Personally I'd buy whatever is the cheapest for the desired capacity/performance level (often Toshiba), but also plan on having a backup of data.
