Need help troubleshooting GTX 970

Rodneyg87

I have a windforce G1 970 and randomly with no overclock applied it will blue screen while playing Heros of the Storm. Normally will happen after 2 or more hours of playtime then I restart my pc no issues for another 2-3 hours. According to my cam software the temps never go above 61 degrees C so I know its not a thermal issue. I'm not to sure if it does it during other games or not due to not really having anything downloaded that appeals to me at the moment and can't download nothing else due to crappy net, I only have 6.5mbps att only thing available where I live till I move in a couple weeks. If anyone knows anything about what this could be it would be appreciated.

What makes you think the GPU causes it?

Asus X99-A w/ BIOS 3402 | Intel i7 5820k OC @4.4GHz 1.28V w/ Noctua NH-U14S | 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 OC @2666MHz 12-14-14-28 | Asus Geforce GTX970 STRIX OC | EVGA 750 G2 750W | Samsung 850 Evo 1 TB | Windows 10 64-bit | Be-Quiet Silent Base 800 w/ Silent Wings | 2x Dell U2414H OC @72Hz w/ Display Port

Don't forget to invest in an Intel Tuning Plan if you're going to overvolt your K/X CPU

Hmm you may be right, but I still wouldn't rule out other hardware causing it - if I rememer it right I've also had a bluescreen but still been able to hear the audio, but it was because I experimented with the RAM.

Have you updated the drivers of the GPU lately? It would be wierd if that would have caused it though as the latest one (376.33 if that one is still the most recent, haven't checked) was actually pretty good and stable. If this issue has been around since the update, then you could try rolling back to the previous version that you know was stable.

Also have you edited any hardware settings (RAM?) or done any overclock, especially on the GPU?

If it's not the drivers I'm not sure what it could be, but you could try downclocking the GPU for now and hope it's stable until you've figured out the real cause.

Try bumping down the memory and coreclock with maybe 30MHz on both of them and see if it works for now. It's not a solution, but a temporary workaround.

I have the latest drivers and honestly this issue has been around since the last set of drivers release. I've tried moving my ram from channels 1/3 to 2/4 no change as for overclocks the only thing I have going is my cpu is overclocked to 4.7ghz but it's been that way for 8 months. I'll try downclocking my gpu down and see. It sorta sucks cause I just got this gpu 3 months ago and now having issues. I was going to buy a 1070 but caught a deal on a used 970 for $140 so I jumped on it haven't had any issues till about 2 weeks ago when the last set before the most recent release came out.

Well then, try reverting back to the older driver

I figured it out. I submitted a ticket to blizzard yesterday after spending 4 hours on battlefield 4 and no issues what so ever while having my card overclocked to 1522mhz. I finally received a reply from a game master from Blizzard and they stated basically their system will cause errors like that if any 3rd party overclocking software/geforce experience/ or cpu overclocks are present in the system. Here is a copy/paste of the email they sent me so you can see for yourself.

Howdy!

I am Game Master and Tech Specialist Vladosiky and I am here to address your e_gfxErrorAPIError crash concern! =D

This crash can be a pain in the butt to narrow down. We have been tracking these specific crashes for some time. Many of them are from overlay and recording software. Many are also from overclocking which has been causing some issues for our games. I have a few steps we can try.

*Before you start this troubleshooting, make sure you have disabled any Overclocks you have on your system and uninstall any Overclocking software you have installed*

I am going to give you some troubleshooting steps. I want you to follow every step listed (even if you have tried them before). These steps have resolved similar problems for other customers, and I’d rather not send you through extra troubleshooting that was not needed. Please do not skip these steps. These steps might take a while to complete, so make sure you have some time set aside to complete them.

1. Start with a clean video card driver install. Completely uninstall your Nvidia drivers using: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Instructions for the Display Driver Uninstaller: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/367109-display-driver-uninstaller-how-use.html

2. Download the newest driver and install it: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Make sure you do a clean install: http://www.sevenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/312657d1396562995-nvidia-drivers-avoid-problems-clean-install-drivers-set-up.jpg

Also do not install the following when you do this:
3D Vision Drivers
Shadowplay
Nvidia Geforce Experience

These are not needed for your computer. Make sure these are uninstalled.

3. Use System file checker: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833

4. Create a new windows admin account: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/Creating-a-New-Administrator-Account

5. Follow all steps at: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/Closing-Background-Applications to verify if any other running programs or services may be causing an issue.

If these steps do not help, please attach a new MSINFO and DXDIAG. Please understand we can verify if any steps were skipped when viewing these files. If all the steps were taken and the issue still resides, we can try some other steps: http://battle.net/support/article/200581

I hope this helps resolve the issue! =)
