I have an IBM thinkpad T40 running XP and &*!$ING #!@% it's impossible to get it to connect to Ethernet. I got both drivers from Lenovo (IBM sold ThinkPad over and now Lenovo run it) and even one from IBM. (I was desperate) and they DO NOT WORK. After running nthe installer it says it is not finished and I should do the next instruction in trhe install instrructions. BTW, they didn't feel the need to provide instructions, so I just rebooted and prayed.

Now all the swear words I used:

Spoiler

FUCKING SHIT MOTHERUFCKING SHIT FUCK FUCKING FUCK FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU SHIT FUCK FUCKETY SHIT

Please help.

I can't really help you based on the fact that Microsoft and Lenovo have discontinued support for your product.

Windows XP is not covered under any support by anybody (unless you happen to work for the Pentagon).

So if the hardware is capable of updating to Windows 7 or newer (by the sound of things it doesn't seem like it can) then i'd recommend upgrading.

Why?

What are you doing? Don't post your serial number just cos somebody asks you!

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

What can some-one do with a serial number?

People can track down serial numbers and sales to find out who bought it if they are clever enough or care enough.

Also, did you try updating your laptop to Windows 7?

If you've even opened an RMA case on it, it'll be easy to get your name/address/phonenumber and so on from the manufacturer. Since S/N is supposed to be a secret it's commonly used as a reference number and they won't question anyone who knows it. Trust me, a lot of people don't seem to know their own name when they call in for RMA. "I don't know. Maybe it was bought in my son's/ company's /wife's name and so on. You look it up, I have the S/N right here."

To go a step further and actually hurt you, trolls/con artists can always report it stolen. If they're convincing enough, you'll find yourself battling to keep the laptop. The very least find a way to prove that you didn't steal it. With your S/N, a receipt will be simple enough to fake.

No, it says T-40 on the front.

ok i don't think lenovo's site hosts drivers for your laptop because the model it returns is wrong. All I can find on IBM is an end of life report that states they dropped support in december 2008; so i doubt they are still hosting drivers for download after handing over the thinkpad line to lenovo. I think your laptop will prob only run linux at this stage.

It's today's bank/google/dropbox/facebook credentials...

its a 13 year old laptop. its prob changed hands a few times. A business only needs to keep invoices for 7 years so all of that documentation is gone. The OP doesnt need to worry about anything other than running Windows XP in 2016
