Even with the months of research for my first PC build, I find I'm still lost when it comes down to what GPU to buy. I have about a week and a half before I buy, since it's going to be the last component purchase I make. Since I'm about to be back to living the life of a broke college student, I have a 1080p monitor and I don't foresee upgrading to 1440p or 4k for a couple of years yet. As such, I'm not very concerned about futureproofing, since I'll be upgrading my graphics card by the time I upgrade my monitor. The highest priority for me is butter smooth gameplay, so FPS comes first. I want to be able to play titles at moderately high graphics settings, not necessarily max them all out. I have no preference when it comes down to AMD or Nvidia cards, but I do want to go with an Asus ROG Strix card, even though they come at a premium. Budget is under $300 US, since my build is way under my original budget and I want to keep it that way so I can pay my tuition off early with the extra cash.

If it helps, I can post my PCPartPicker list. Thanks!

Quality isn't measured in Watts. It's not the Wattage that I'm worried about.

Had to be the CX... I mean, your build's kinda much for 1080p. A 470 would work and save you a good chunk.

I bought the power supply on Cyber Monday, not really taking the time I normally do to triple check on things, and I had a few regrets afterwards. It'll probably be replaced as well when I upgrade for the first time. As for the rest of the build, I did futureproof with many components and had some I was willing to go more premium for so I won't have to upgrade for quite a while. It just has ended up being that the GPU is not one of them. It's not an optimum 1080p build, I know.

Eh, could technically get the 470, with money saved there spend an extra $60 to get a better PSU now, then sell of the Cx to make back some of the money.

They always fall for the CX lol. Really they aren't terrible PSUs as long as you live in a cool enviroment, as bad as that is. But it will handle a 1060 6gb or even 1070/1080 although I wouldn't run one of those on it.

A 1060 6gb will run you about $250-270 which will be plenty. Although down the line if you oc that I7 you can grab a 1070 or maybe a Vega GPU along with a GSync/Freesync monitor. Being that its down the line Id for sure say keep an eye on Vega since a high end AMD gpu plus Freesync.. sploosh

RX 480 4GB or GTX 1060 6GB would be best for 1080p

My only problem is that it's in a practical $1,000 build. You can get so much better at that point.

That's true, im just saying the CX lines aren't the worse things in the world like people think they are. A 600watt ran a 8350 and R9 280 for 2 years with no problems. He should take it back and try to get at least a CX650M, but if not its not going to explode like people think.

I'm aware. Still, just that it's a $1,000 build.

Seeing a lot of recommendations for the 1060 and a few for the 1050Ti......... (lol)

Ignore those

For the best GPU(s) with the best price to performance look at the RX 470 and the RX 480.

RX 470: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137050&cm_re=RX_470-_-14-137-050-_-Product

RX 480: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137049&cm_re=RX_480-_-14-137-049-_-Product

All under $190 USD

These cards will serve you well at ultra settings at 1080p and will provide solid 60fps+ frame rates. The 480 is the better card but it is also more expensive.
