I parents bought me some corsair lpx ddr4 ram at 2666 MHz cas latency 16. I didn't realize that the cas latency was so high when I recommended it to them. I heard that sometimes the cas latency and speed can affect performance in CPU intensive titles. I plan on playing bf1. My questions are: is this ram bad? Also, is it worth it to do a return?

It'll be fine, in CPU intensive scenarios lower cas latency does help slightly, but it's not a giant difference.

Like a 1-2 fps difference or 5-6 fps difference?

Like 0.05fps difference aka none, games won't care about that hell the speed barely affects them

The cas latency doesn't really matter, as stated. Ram speeds in general don't matter although some newer games do seem to take advantage of faster ram. (only like 1-2 fps though max)

Also remember: CAS latency is measured in clock cycles. Even if you could find say a CAS 14 RAM module, you're shaving a grand total of 0.75 nanoseconds.

What do you guys think of these results, I'll be gaming at 1440p so idk how much it'll matter at that resolution, but this result is interesting.

That is pretty interesting. If it really matters you can overclocked it later but I wouldn't stress over it if you already have the kit.

Well they are simply comparing speed, cas goes up with ram speed so frankly its a non issue, also they don't mention whether they are using something like dual channel or quad channel in the test which would effectively double ram speeds, and I assume they put it into a cpu bound scenario to get the results

Honestly I think you're stressing way too much about numbers.

Just get the fastest part you can afford and if you can't afford all of the fastest parts, figure out what compromises you're willing to make and which ones have more weight on what you want to do. For games, it's basically GPU > CPU > RAM Capacity > SSD >>>> Everything else.

You're right. Considering I'll be gaming at 1440p, have a gtx 1070, and bf1 is pretty atmospheric, I won't notice even a 10 fps difference at the frame rates that I'll be getting. I tend to worry about the little things lol.

Besides, if it does bother me I could always sell the ram on eBay and buy a new kit.
