I'd say yes. Buying a 970 is good if you only have a 1080 monitor or want to try triple 1080@60. Buy newer is always preferred, but I would choose a 1070 if you want to save up.

You're nuts. The 970 for $120 is a very good deal. There are two on my local craigslist for $250 and $200 respectively. Heck, I bought a 960 2gb for $100 and thought it was a good deal...

OP: Buy it. It'll last you plenty of time.

A GTX 970 is about as good as a GTX 1060 3gb, thats a great deal.

That's not really true :) It's quite a bit slower, by 7% on average than a 3GB 1060. The 1060 is newer, and theoretically has less VRAM, though the 970 isn't much better in that regard, only 3,5GB of full-speed memory. Both cards aren't a good buy. Unless on a really good deal.

Well, 7% is more than enough to make people go for one GPU over the other, so I'd say that this difference is not as insignificant as you make it. It's about the gap between Fury X and 980Ti at launch and noone would recommend you to get the Fury X because it's "about as good"...

Used GTX 970 should cost around the same as a used R9 290X which is faster... And it has full 4GB of full speed VRAM.

GTX 970 for $120 is a stellar deal. IMO the 1060 is not worth the extra $80.
