4K = better picture quality, harder to run, more expensive, max 60Hz for now

1440p = easier to run, cheaper, available up to 165Hz for now, and also available in Ultrawide 3440x1440

Right now 4K for gaming doesn't make much sense. 1440p looks better then 1080p but you can also get 144FPS instead of barely getting 60FPS. In a couple years 4K will be the norm for gaming. We just need better GPUs, aka Volta

I would get a 4K monitor. You can play 1080@60 very well with little to no scaling issues while also being ahead of the curve whenever a 2160@60 GPU comes around for mid-range prices.

at least on windows 4k scaling is still poopoo for one. 4k gaming is essentially out of the question with a single gpu other than a titan or a 1080 at the moment, but if its included in the debate, a gtx 1080 is probably not out of the question so I suppose that's less of an argument.

Personally, I think if youre gaming only buying a 144hz 1440p ips monitor is the best way to go. (I hate tn monitors sorry not sorry, if im spending 500 bucks on a monitor the color better be perfect.) if youre rendering 4k video or photos, then without question just get the best IPS 4k panel you can find, but again for gaming, that jump in refresh rate will be just as if not more noticeable than the jump in resolution. With the added bonus knowing that you wont have to worry about lousy frame rates for a very very long time.

Having owned the following two panels, I can give you some real world experience:

4k, 28"

1440P, 27"

 

Trying to focus on resolution only, I can hardly see any noticeable benefit (in games) of the higher ppi at reasonable viewing distance. The picture quality on the same settings is almost equal at this display size. But even with a 1080 you would end up with lower settings and/or lower framerates on 4K.

So, paired with a 980Ti, I percieved the overall quality on the 4k as lower, than the 1440p. With a lower end GPU the difference would even increase.

 

The story changes however, if you have a crazy powerful setup (Titan XP or dual something) or a even larger display. I assume, that on 32" 4k would make alot more sense then, if you have the hardware to push high/ultra settings.

1440p of course. Nice Visuals, top Performance. 4k is ridiculous overrated below 32" and costs way too much Performance.

I have 3x 1440p SLI surround in portrait.

 

I'll be moving to 4K only when the GPUs can give me the equivalent of a 110 cm x 60 cm screen that I have now

 

At the moment x2 Titan XP in SLI will not be enough in 4K and 60FPS.

 

However x2 ASUS 980Ti STRIX in SLI is more than enough for x3 1440p SLI Surround and 60FPS
