Brand New Personal build turns on but no video output thru mobo or GPU

Hello everybody,

Over the course of November I've been buying parts for personal rig and yesterday I've finally had enough time off work and school to put it all together. After about 4 hours of building and minor cable management, I decided to boot it up without GPU to make sure it POSTS and I can update BIOS and OS on it. What the PC did is, it turned on - all the fans were working, the "power on" LED on motherboard lit up green, the general LED along the board worked, but there was no video output. What I have tried as of yesterday:

  1. Different monitors with different cables (VGA, DVI, HDMI) with different combinations
  2. Tried different combinations of RAM in DIMM slots (only 1 in each slot, 2 in different slots and etc). From what I've read, that's the first step to troubleshooting it
  3. Tried holding the power button on the front of the case for 30-60 seconds while disconnecting PSU from the wall cable (random suggestions from Tom's)
  4. Tried installing GPU and checking if the graphics would go thru it - no luck.

After hours of doing this I was extremely tired and upset and I'm looking for someone to help me solve this. Nobody ever tells you how hard it is to align the IO shield with the motherboard because of all the metal on it (shield), and I've started reaching the breaking point about half way through the build just because of IO. Unfortunately this is the only PC in the house so I don't have any other system where I can check the components one by one, and the 1 month return on CPU (if it is the problem) has expired as of today. I'm desperate for help, and would appreciate any advice.

My build:

Is there anything else I can do to make sure that it's my CPU that needs RMA? I don't want to go thru the process if at the end of the day it's my MOBO

Try a different CPU.

It's not at all a hard process to go through.

Reset the CMOS, tell us how it goes.

If the case didn't come with reset CMOS header, do I just shorten 2 pins with a screwdriver?

If it has the pins, then yes. But from what I've gathered, your mobo only allows CMOS to be restarted by removing the battery.

Thanks, I'll try it out. What does clearing CMOS usually do?

Removes all the settings applied to factory default. Basically defaults the BIOS.

Will the computer load up to the windows screen if you leave the card plugged in and use on board graphics?

1. It doesn't even have an OS on it yet

2. No it doesn't. Basically black screen, monitors go back to sleep as if they don't recognize any source of vidiya

More then likely a dead GPU, looking at your list (I doubt it but you never know) it might be an issue with the power supply.
